The use of artificial substrates is one of several approaches available for collecting samples of benthic invertebrates from a wide variety of environments. This report is a literature review that critically examines the use of artificial substrates for collecting benthos samples, and makes recommendations on the utility & limitations of this approach as a cost-effective environmental monitoring tool for the Canadian mining industry. The review includes a survey of colonization dynamics since this affects the performance of artificial substrates, an assessment of the strengths & weaknesses of artificial substrate sampling compared with conventional sampling, and a detailed evaluation of four classes of artificial substrates that are potentially useful for environmental monitoring in the mining industry: multi-plate samplers, Beak trays, and rock-filled baskets & trays. Advantages & drawbacks of each device are compared using a consistent set of criteria including reliability of data, ease & practicality of use, and cost.
