"If you're open to God's call, and He leads you into missions, you couldn't be in a better place!" The Saga of a Bent Nail Retired missionary, Bob Leland, recounts adventures from his more than thirty years in the mission field in Indonesia (1971-2002). Both he and his wife answered God's call to missions when they were just children (6 and 8 years old). Their first posting was to Senggo (church-planting) followed by several changes of duties including house parenting, field administration, Bible College teaching, training missionary appointees, and translating the Greek Lexicon from English into Indonesian. Bob's book opens with a moment of deep crisis in the early days of the Senggo mission, is enhanced with Bible verses, black-and-white photos, frank admissions of shortcomings, and a lively sense of humor. The intriguing narrative shows how the couple survived sickness, accidents and unexpected challenges in their ministry. In spite of language and cultural differences, they were encouraged with how the Citak people and their students responded to the Word of God. Bob and Amber remain active in church work in the U.S. and helpfully offers this memoir as guidance for all Christians, but especially for those contemplating the mission path.

Michael T. Prophet is the Batman of prophets. He possesses no superpower other than forgiveness. His arch enemy is Apollyon, who strikes fear in the heart of the faithful. The world he lives in has changed causing Evangelical Christian to struggle in their faith because of unrestrained economic prosperity, political power, and pleasurable indulgences. A farmer went out to sow his seed. With these eight words, Jesus gives His church planting instructions still vibrant with meaning in this 21st century of satellite-guided tractors and wind farms. This colorful book by veteran radio scriptwriter David B. Smith shares fifteen fresh slices of truth about how we can relate to the four types of soil: pathway, stony, thorny . . . and sometimes good. Smith, now a math professor, is a collector of spicy illustrations: West Wing, Law & Order, Everybody Loves Raymond. Linus, Lucy, and Charlie Brown. His beloved Dodgers and the Abe Lincoln candidacy of 1860. Nazgul invader birds from "Lord of the Rings" and Tom Hanks finding Meg Ryan at the top of the Empire State Building. The Lewinsky political scandal and rocker Little Richard. And all through his folksy teaching are poignant stories from his beloved childhood home of Thailand and humor bits from his college classes. "The Saga of Farmer Jesus" gratefully draws from the good soil of Christian writers like Bill Hybels, Morris Venden, and C. S. Lewis. All through these pages, you'll find joy in the challenge of spading up the rocky soil of your own heart. David B. Smith is also the author of "Finding Waldo," the "Bucky Stone" Adventure sports series, and "Rachel Marie," an upcoming collection of Christian love stories set in Bangkok.

The Color Of Christ written by Edward J. Blum and has been published by UNC Press Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09-21 with Religion categories.

How is it that in America the image of Jesus Christ has been used both to justify the atrocities of white supremacy and to inspire the righteousness of civil rights crusades? In The Color of Christ, Edward J. Blum and Paul Harvey weave a tapestry of American dreams and visions--from witch hunts to web pages, Harlem to Hollywood, slave cabins to South Park, Mormon revelations to Indian reservations--to show how Americans remade the Son of God visually time and again into a sacred symbol of their greatest aspirations, deepest terrors, and mightiest strivings for racial power and justice. The Color of Christ uncovers how, in a country founded by Puritans who destroyed depictions of Jesus, Americans came to believe in the whiteness of Christ. Some envisioned a white Christ who would sanctify the exploitation of Native Americans and African Americans and bless imperial expansion. Many others gazed at a messiah, not necessarily white, who was willing and able to confront white supremacy. The color of Christ still symbolizes America's most combustible divisions, revealing the power and malleability of race and religion from colonial times to the presidency of Barack Obama.

"From a mission field to a missions sender." These words capture the story of the Brazilian evangelical church, which has gone from receiving missionaries in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to becoming a movement that presently sends out more global laborers than the churches of England or Canada do. After narrating Brazil's missional shift, in this volume Smither addresses one fascinating element of the story--Brazilian evangelical efforts in the Arab world. How have Brazilians adapted culturally among Arabs, how have they approached ministry, and how have they cultivated a theology of mission in the process? Brazilian Evangelical Missions in the Arab World gives the reader insights from one emerging missions movement with an eye toward a more comprehensive view of the global church.

SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2021 SPEAKER'S BOOK AWARD • LONGLISTED FOR THE 2021 TORONTO BOOK AWARD “[A] deeply moving memoir...[and] lyrical story.... Suffused with poetic prose that jumps off the page, this inspiring account sings.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) Raised by his indomitable grandmother in the lush rainforest of southern Trinidad, Antonio Michael Downing, at age 11, is uprooted to Canada when she dies. He and his older brother are sent to live with his stern, evangelical Aunt Joan, in a tiny northern Ontario community where they are the only Black children in the town. In this wilderness, after a disappointing reunion with his birth parents, he begins his journey as an immigrant minority, using music and performance to dramatically transform himself. He tries to flee his messy family life by morphing into a series of extravagant musical personalities: “Mic Dainjah,” a punk rock rapper, “Molasses,” a soul music crooner and finally “John Orpheus,” a gold chained, sequin- and leather-clad pop star. Yet, like his father and grandfather, he has become a “Saga Boy,” a Trinidadian playboy, addicted to escapism, attention, and sex. When the inevitable crash happens, he finds himself in a cold, stone jail cell, having become everything he was trying to escape. At the heart of his odyssey is the longing for a home. Richly evocative, Saga Boy is a heart-wrenching but uplifting story of a lonely immigrant boy who overcomes adversity and abandonment to reclaim his Black identity and embrace a rich heritage.
