There is vast amount of research that shows that parental involvement in children's education has been associated with children's school success, including higher academic achievement, better behavior, lower absenteeism, and more positive attitudes toward school (Overstreet, Dvine, Bevans, & Efreom, 2005). Attracting parents to schools has always been a challenge, especially in urban schools. Now, as schools face this charge of involving parents in their children's academic life through the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, they face at the same time an increase in immigrant population. This adds new demands for creating just, equitable and successful schools (Arce et al., 2005, Cambron-McCabe & McCarthy, 2005; Mayers, 2006). School leaders must determine the best ways to attract parents, at the same time that they may have to redefine their concept of what parent involvement means (Henderson et al., 2007; Hoerr, 2005). The participants for this single case study consisted of 1) the principal of the school, 2) teachers of the school, 3) Latino immigrant parents whose children attend the school, and 4) the school secretary. The study findings revealed two themes that emerged from the actions of the principal: 1) Institutional Receptivity, and 2) Awakening to Self-Reliance. The implications of this inquiry for practice in education could impact both K-12 institutions and higher education institutions as they address the issues of diversity in schools, parental involvement, and giving voice to the marginalized, thus creating truly inclusive school climates.

Latinos make up the largest immigrant population in the United States. As such, schools are become increasingly diverse, thereby demonstrating the need for effective, culturally proficient leadership. Principals are looked upon to instill school culture and increase parent involvement, which may be associated with student achievement. Still, Latino parent involvement has historically lagged behind its White counterparts, falling behind as early as middle school. As principals lead efforts to increase parent involvement, especially with Latino parents, examining parent-principal trust can potentially provide benefits to educational leaders in multicultural settings. The purpose of this study was to investigate what factors contributed to principal cultural proficiency from the Latino parent perspective. A phenomenological approach was used and employed 20 parent interviews and a focus group in a middle school in California. Data were analyzed through transcriptions and deductively coded to examine patterns and construct themes. Findings from the study demonstrated that Latino parents at this school desired more communication and interaction with their school principal, that their trust of the principal was directly related to the principal’s care of the students demonstrated through direct actions, and that a significant lack of Latino culture was represented at this school, which could be improved by the principal. Lastly, the study showed that in order for Latino parents in this school to feel valued, they needed to make a proactive effort to get involved in school activities.

Latinos have a pattern of low academic achievement, starting in elementary school and persisting through high school and college. This pattern of achievement remains lower than that of any other group. In 2050, it is expected that Latinos will make up 30% of the U.S. workforce. This research looks at the role that parent involvement plays in academic achievement based on principals' perceptions. Perceptions are important because they influence behavior and decision making. The parent-involvement activities studied are based on the Epstein framework of six types. A survey was sent to 435 principals from the northwest suburbs of Chicago who served in schools that had a substantial Latino population. Statistical analysis of the data indicated that learning at home and communication were the two types of activities that 102 respondent principals viewed as most significant. They saw involving parents in decision making as having the least impact on achievement. Demographic characteristics of principals were reviewed, and gender, education, and ethnicity were significant in terms of the six types of parent-involvement activities. Qualitative data recorded from open-ended questions gave Spanish language services as the most important factor playing a positive role in family-involvement activities and lack of Spanish abilities on the part of school personnel and English deficiencies on the part of parents as the biggest barrier. The principals were asked if they had been trained in parent-involvement activities, and a full 73% of them said they had not had a single class in parent involvement in their professional preparation. Language services seem to be significant in increasing relationships between parents and school personnel. This can lead to better communication about how to support students at home and in school. It is clear from the study that principals could benefit from more training in this area in preparation for working with Latino student populations.

Students who drop out of high school experience lower incomes and greater unemployment and are at higher risk of becoming part of the adult corrections system and of needing public assistance. Historically, Latino/a youth, particularly Mexican American youth, have been at particularly high risk for underachievement and dropping out of high school. Because Latino/as are the fastest growing ethnic group in the United States, their struggle in education means a larger, undereducated work force. In spite of demographic factors such as poverty, language barriers, and discrimination that potentially can adversely impact the success of the children of Mexican immigrant parents, some of these parents are taking steps to help their children succeed in high school and to enter college. While parental involvement has been generally linked to improving students' outcomes and attitudes toward school, few studies have focused on minority parents, particularly Latino/as. Even fewer have conducted qualitative studies to develop a deeper understanding of parents' beliefs, values, and actions taken to help their children. Through semi-structured interviews and grounded theory analysis, this qualitative study investigated how and why Mexican immigrant parents help their children succeed in school. Six themes emerged from the data: 1) parents' motivations stem from childhood adversity, the belief that there are opportunities in the U.S. for people who succeed academically, and unrealized dreams to pursue their own education; 2) parents' actions primarily included behaviors at home; 3) the influence of "La Familia" (the protective force of the family); 4) the influence of discipline; 5) the influence of teachers and principals who recognized and supported their children's academic success; and 6) the influence of the children themselves. Despite variations in educational attainment and income levels, the parents' values, beliefs, and actions were similar to each other and reflect their Mexican cultural upbringing. By developing a deeper understanding of the parents' beliefs, values, and actions, more culturally informed and strength-based, parent-involvement approaches can be developed for similar Mexican immigrant parents. Implications, limitations, and suggestions for future research are explored.

The questions associated with the potential influence of parental involvement on students' achievement at school have long been a focus of educational research. In particular, the involvement of immigrant Latino parents on the success of their children at school has been a matter of debate. This question is especially important with regard to students from Latino backgrounds who have the highest dropout rate across California and the United States. While the popular views are that Latino parents' involvement brings little benefit and that Latino parents are unwilling to be involved in the educational matters of their children, this study sought to determine whether these views could be validated empirically with regard to 5th graders. Specifically, the purpose of the study was to examine the level and nature of the involvement of immigrant Latino parents in their high-achieving children's school activities with the aim of establishing ways and means through which all parents can be empowered to help their children achieve academic success. The objectives of the research were to explore immigrant Latino parents' participation in their high-achieving children's schooling; to determine how limited English-speaking Latino parents supported their children in becoming high achievers; to describe what Latino parents do in and out of school to support their children's academic performance; and to examine the home and school environment to which Latino high-achieving students are exposed for maximum opportunities for academic skills. To achieve the objectives, the author employed a qualitative research design. Specifically, qualitative data was collected from individual interviews with a random sample of ten immigrant Latino parents and their 5th grade students who have shown a pattern of high academic achievement as defined by the California Standards Tests (CSTs) over the course of three years data. Interview data revealed that Latino parents are interested and are involved in their children's education. The involvement of these particular immigrant parents in their high-achieving children's education occurs primarily at home and secondarily at school. The study found that low educational background and specific cultural practices did not prevent these parents from being highly involved in their children's education both at home and at school. Parents mentioned their role in enhancing children's motivation, developing love for schooling, providing outside help by, for example, hiring experts to help. At the same time, the teacher-parent connection was found to be quite limited with the major obstacle being the language barrier. Students were found to positively assess their parents' involvement in their education. The findings illustrate the experience of immigrant Latino parents in promoting the education of their high achieving children. Specifically, the findings validate the importance of parental involvement in education of their primary school children and provide the background for recommendations as to making this involvement more effective.
