The paper is a report of an experimental investigation of the dissolving of gas nuclei (small gas bubbles) in turbulently flowing water in a pipe. The rate of dissolving is important in a circulating water tunnel because it determines whether or not cavitation produced nuclei reach a small size to produce tensile strength in the water, increase the cavitation inception level, and affect the results of a cavitation test. The rate of dissolving is greatly affected by the presence of surface films that form about gas nuclei from trace organic materials dissolved in the water. (Author).

A method of measuring the spectral distribution of cavitation nuclei in liquid in the form of gas bubbles is described and the results of tests for determining the number of nuclei in the water supply line are given. The property of gas bubbles to cause absorption of ultrasonic energy propagating in the medium water gas bubbles was established as a means for measuring the spectral distribution of cavitation nuclei. It was also shown that the basic causes of ultrasonic energy absorption were: (1) the transfer of heat from the bubbles to the liquid during periodic changes in volume under the effect of a sound wave, (2) dissipation of a part of the energy, since a bubble of resonance dimensions becomes itself a spherical emitter of sound.

The report concerns research on the problem of transient cavitation on hydrodynamic bodies near inception conditions. A probabilistic model of the process is presented. The experimental apparatus for providing the bubble size distribution, which is a necessary input to the probabilistic model, is described. An acoustic cavitation occurrence counting system that can be used to check on the output of the probabilistic model is also described. Experiments conducted on a half body in a 6-inch water tunnel test system achieved fair agreement between the predictions of the probabilistic model and the measurements by the occurrence counting technique in some cases. Cavitation refers to a distinctive occurrence within liquid flows where there is a phase change process involving the rapid transformation of liquid into vapour in regions of low pressure, followed by collapsing or implosion when pressure rises again. The study of cavitation dates back to the late 19th century. While the term “cavitation” was originally coined by R. E. Froude and first documented by Barnaby and Thornycroft in 1895, the concept had been speculated upon much earlier by L. Euler in his 1754 theory on water turbines. However, the phenomenon of cavitation was initially observed and examined by Barnaby and Parsons in 1893. They identified that the formation of vapour bubbles on propeller blades had led to the failure of the sea trial of the British high-speed warship HMS Daring in 1885. In 1895, Parsons established the first water tunnel dedicated to cavitation research, revealing the connection between cavitation and propeller damage. The theoretical groundwork for cavitation research was laid by Rayleigh in 1917, as he successfully addressed the collapse of an empty cavity within a substantial liquid mass. Since then, numerous research work has been published on cavitating flow.

The Acoustic Bubble describes the interaction of acoustic fields with bubbles in liquid. The book consists of five chapters. Chapter 1 provides a basic introduction to acoustics, including some of the more esoteric phenomena that can be seen when high-frequency high-intensity underwater sound is employed. Chapter 2 discusses the nucleation of cavitation and basic fluid dynamics, while Chapter 3 draws together the acoustics and bubble dynamics to discuss the free oscillation of a bubble and acoustic emissions from such activity. The acoustic probes that are often applied to study the behavior of a bubble when an externally-applied acoustic field drives it into oscillation is deliberated in Chapter 4. The last chapter outlines a variety of effects associated with acoustically-induced bubble activity. The bubble detection, sonoluminescence, sonochemistry, and pulse enhancement are also covered. This publication is a good reference for physics and engineering students and researchers intending to acquire knowledge of the acoustic interactions of acoustic fields with bubbles.
