Decades of research suggest that leadership holds the reins of an organization. More current research, however, identifies followers as possessing the primary influence within an organization, not leadership. This study takes a follower-centric approach to leadership by surveying and analyzing high school teachers & rsquo; followership styles and corresponding motivations to inform principal-leaders. Differentiation of leadership styles builds capacity for enhancement of interdependence and interrelations among the educational environment between teacher-followers and principal-leaders. Specifically, affiliation, autonomy, dominance and achievement are the dominant motivators from which the teacher-followers were categorized, and those motivators were correlated with followership styles as alienated, conformist, pragmatist, passive, and exemplary. This study quantitatively examines teacher-follower followership styles and motivations from survey item analysis and comparisons between groups. The results of item means, standard deviations, and statistics revealed that despite having a sample of respondents that was skewed by style of followership, with far too many & ldquo;Exemplary & rdquo; followers than the instrument norms would suggest, links were observed between a respondents & rsquo; dominant style, their age categorized, and such age-related concerns as years of teaching and years of formal education. Across all types of teacher followers, the need for Achievement was most pronounced, followed by the need for Autonomy. Compared to these two needs, those for Affiliation and Dominance were significantly less in evidence, but neither of the latter two needs was more or less in evidence than the other. Across groups, & ldquo;Exemplary & rdquo; followers express more need for Achievement, Affiliation, and Dominance, but not more need for Autonomy. Understanding teacher-followers & rsquo; followership styles and motivations can be used as a framework for assisting principal-leaders in recognizing what leadership styles might appropriately motivate teachers within their school.

Previous books of the Leadership Horizon Series showed unequivocally how both leaders and followers play an equally important part in the co-production of leadership outcomes, and how leader and follower identities are fluid, so that the same individual can enact both at different times. This book stretches the notion of leadership a step further by exploring the co-enactment of both roles, identities, and positions of leader and follower by one same individual. This individual is defined as a connecting leader, as in this co-enactment he/she functions as connector between different leadership relationships. The concept of connecting leader emerges from the observation that most individuals in organizations engage in the leader-follower role co-enactment: managers, pulled between executives and reportees; CEOs, between the board and the head of departments; or employees involved in cross functional teams, leading and following in different degrees, subject to their expertise. Yet, despite its pervasiveness this concept is at best under theorized by the literature, which, dominated by dyadic and romanticized views, mostly presents the roles as enacted by separate individuals facing each other. To advance our understanding of connecting leaders the editor proposes to shift our focus on leadership in three ways: to unpack the interconnectedness and interplay of leader and follower identities; to investigate the tensions arising from the co-enactment and how these can be overcome; to widen the way in which we study leadership, through new configurations (e.g. leadership triads) and ontologies; and finally to consider the similarities between leading and following. The book chapters are organized to mirror these areas of exploration. Understanding leadership from a perspective that acknowledges that many individuals in organizations are not just leaders or followers, but both, democratizes the way we theorize leadership, and moves us further away from the temptation to romanticize it.

Recent evidence indicates that nearly 25,000 school principals vacate the role each year. This problem is acutely serious in urban schools and urban school districts. Consequently, many transitioning principals are asked to enter and lead schools laden with uncertainty and unstableness. This narrative study explored how newly transitioned principals in a large urban school district in the southeast United States, experiencing frequent principal transitions, describe their experiences of developing relationships with their followers and how those followers shaped the newly transitioned principals' leadership. Participants of this study were 12 principals who had been at their school site no more than three years and were outside appointments. Informing the study was leader-member exchange theory and followership theory. Following semi-structured interviews, the data was inductively analyzed manually, and seven themes emerged. Key findings highlight approaches the principals used to build and maintain relationships, the styles of followers they encountered, and how those followers influenced the principals. This study concluded with suggestions for further research and implications for theory and practice.
