This report presents the results of an exploratory analysis of armed robbery in Australia. The study had two aims. The first was to provide an analysis of the characteristics of armed robberies, the offenders and the victims, while the second was to examine the value of a regular armed robbery monitoring program. Data were supplied by state and territory police services for a three month period in 2001, with a pilot subset of incident narratives for the same period.

This analysis of 16,235 records relating to armed robbery in Australia between 1996 and 1998 finds that there were no differences in the type of weapon used by an offender of armed robbery based on the type of victim selected, whether an individual or anorganisation; generally, knives were used most often to commit armed robbery, although when the target was a bank, credit union or building society a firearm was more frequently used; and there were no differences in the type of weapon used according to gender and age of offenders. The report also makes a number of suggestions to improve our knowledge of armed robbery, including the redirection of our research focus from firearms towards examining the increasing use of "other weapons" to commit armed robbery; the need for in depth research into the complex reasons associated with increases in the use of "other weapons"; and a concerted effort towards improvements in data quality and breadth of information collected.

The inaugural annual report of the National Armed Robbery Monitoring program (NARMP) has been released. This program was established to identify and monitor trends in armed robbery, especially trends in weapon use, following the recommendation of the Australasian Police Ministers' Council. Police services in all Australian states and territories provide information about reported armed robbery victims, the offenders who robbed them, and other aspects of the attack, such as location. Data concerning the types of weapons used in armed robbery in 2003, even though subject to some limitations, are nonetheless informative. The majority of armed robbery victimisations (91%) involved a single type of weapon, the most common being a single knife (46% of all victims). Single firearms were listed for one-fifth of cases. The most frequently reported combination of weapon types was 'knife plus other weapon' (1%). The 'other weapon' category captures a wide variety of items, including implements whose primary purpose is not necessarily that of weaponry such as sledgehammers and other tools, sticks, rocks, bricks, and bottles. Victims robbed by offenders using only 'other weapons' made up 21% of all cases for 2003 contained in the NARMP.
