Excerpt from An Historic Mansion: Being an Account of the Thaddeus Burr Homestead, Fairfield, Connecticut, 1654 1915 It was about eight o'clock on the morning of April 22nd 1775 that a messenger brought the news of Lexington to Fairfield. The Honorable Thaddeus Burr, High Sheriff of the County, was standing on the porch of his mansion, discussing with Colonel Silliman and Mr. Jonathan Sturges the prospects of war. A horseman galloping down the street, came to a sudden halt in front of the three members of the Town Committee of Correspondence. A packet was thrust into the hands of Colonel Silliman. Although there are other books about renovating old houses, this is the first that prioritizes the identification and preservation of the historic, character-defining features of a house as a starting point in the process. That is the purpose of this book: to describe and illustrate a best-practices approach for updating historic homes for modern life in ways that do not attempt to turn an old house into a new one. The book also suggests many ways to save money in the process, without settling for cheap or inappropriate solutions. Scott Hanson is a historic-building preservation professional and has 40 years' experience rehabilitating historic houses. He has illustrated this authoritative book with hundreds of step-by-step photos, illustrations, charts, and decision-making guides. Interspersed throughout are photo essays of 13 restored historic houses representing a range of periods and architectural styles: Italianate, Victorian, Queen Anne, Federal, Colonial, Colonial Revival, Greek Revival, Ranch, Adobe, Craftsman, Shingle, and Rustic. With interior and exterior photography by David Clough, these multi-page features show what can be achieved when a historic home is renovated with a desire to preserve or restore as much historic character as possible.

Queens, New York, boasts a rich history that includes dozens of poorly publicized but historically impressive houses. A mix of farmsteads, mansions, seaside escapes, and architecturally significant community dwellings, these homes were owned by America's forefathers, nouveau riche industrialists, Wall Street tycoons, and prominent African American entertainers from the Jazz Age. Rufus King, a senator and the youngest signer of the US Constitution, operated a large family farm in Jamaica, while piano manufacturer extraordinaire William Steinway lived in a 27-room, granite and bluestone Italianate villa in Astoria. Local musicians include Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, James Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, and Lena Horne. Through more than 200 photographs, Historic Houses of Queens explores the borough's most notable residences--their architecture, owners, surrounding neighborhoods, peculiarities, and even their fates as some vanished due to financial problems or fires.

Excerpt from The History of the Mansion House Hen it was decided in 1728 to build the Mansion House a Committee was formed and it was known as the Mansion House Committee, the name was altered to the General Purposes Committee in I789, and that Committee is still entrusted with all matters arising in connection with the building, but in addition it has, as its name implies, other duties. For many years I had considered the idea of writing a history of the building and had collected material, and when the War broke out, the customary holiday in France or Italy became impossible, and I had time to devote to research work in London, Oxford and elsewhere. In 191 6 the Chairman of the General Purposes Committee kindly mentioned my work to his Committee, which resolved that permission be sought for him to search the records in Guildhall, and also have permission to search the records at the Mansion House at any time convenient to the Lord Mayor. Consequently I had exceptional facilities for carrying on my researches. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
