Ambient Networks defines a new kind of network architecture, which embeds support for co operation and competition between diverse network types within a common control layer. This unified networking concept can adapt to the heterogeneous environments of different radio technologies and service and network environments. Special focus is placed on facilitating both competition and co-operation of various market players, by defining interfaces which allow the instant negotiation of cooperation agreements. The Ambient Networking concept has been developed in the framework of the Ambient Networks project, which is co-sponsored by the European Union under the Information Society Technology (IST) priority of the 6th Framework Programme. The Ambient Networks project mobilised the work of researchers from over forty different organisations, both major industrial corporations and leading academic institutions, from Europe and worldwide. This book offers a complete and detailed overview of the Ambient Networking concept and its core technologies. The authors explain the problems with current mobile IP networks and the need for a new mobility-aware IP-based control architecture, before presenting the Ambient Networking concept itself and the business opportunities that it offers. The architecture, components, features and challenges of Ambient Networking are covered in depth, with comprehensive discussions of multi-radio access, generic Ambient Network signalling, mobility support, context and network management and built-in media delivery overlay control. Ambient Networks: Co-operative Mobile Networking for the Wireless World Explains the need for Ambient Networking, discussing the limitations of today’s proposed architectures, and explaining the business potential of edge networks and network co-operation. Describes Ambient Networking technology in detail, and addresses the technical challenges for implementation. Includes practical user scenarios which are fully analysed and assessed through simulation studies. Including a complete examination of the research and technologies arising from the Ambient Networks concept, Ambient Networks will be invaluable for research and development teams in networking and communications technology, as well as advanced students in electrical engineering and computer science faculties. The beginning of the twenty-first century is characterized by global markets, and the mobility of people is becoming an important fact of life. Consequently, the mobile user is demanding appropriate technical solutions to make use of customized information and communication services. In this context the notion of next-generation networks (NGNs), which are driven by the convergence of the entertainment sector, the mobile Internet, and fixed/mobile telecommunications, is emerging. Such NGNs are aggregating a variety of different access networks and supporting the seamless connection of an open set of end-user devices, and due to the adoption of an all-IP network paradigm they enable a much better integration of voice and data services. Coincidently the buzzword ‘fixed mobile convergence’ (FMC) describes the current trend towards providing common services across fixed and mobile networks resulting in the medium term in the full integration of fixed and mobile telecommunication networks. The adoption of appropriate middleware technologies and the provision of - called service delivery platforms driven by the ongoing innovation in the field of information technologies provides today the technical foundation for supporting terminal, personal and service mobility and thus the implementation of real seamless information and communication services. Furthermore, users are nowadays looking, in light of an omnipresent service environment, for a much higher degree of customization and context awareness in the services they use. The papers in this volume look at these enabling mobility-aware technologies and their use for implementing mobility-aware and context-aware applications.

I love the idea of a Smart Internet that lets users improve many parts of their lives, pulling together data and services from around the internet. This won’t happen with large unwieldy programming requirements. . . it will happen because we’re moving towards integrated, simple tasks that users can do on an every day basis. With services available on the cloud, with analytics available, with data that has meaning to the user and not just to some protocol parser - with all of these, users at all levels will be able to do a better job. The users may be small and large enterprises, local governments, individuals, etc. All of this means that as the world is becoming more intelligent, instrumented and more interconnected, we’ll be headed towards smarter health care, smarter cities, and smarter lives. ” — Gennaro A. Software systems for wireless and mobile communications are a key component in pervasive computing and are crucial for the materialization of easy-to-use and intel- gent services that people can use ubiquitously. As indicated by its acronym (MOBILe Wireless MiddleWARE, Operating Systems, and Applications), these are the type of systems that form the topic of the MOBILWARE conferencing series. In particular, the goal of MOBILWARE is to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners to disseminate and discuss recent advances in software systems for wireless and mobile communications, ranging from work on communication middleware and operating systems to networking protocols and applications. For its second edition, held in Berlin in April 2009, the MOBILWARE Organizing Committee decided to add a full day of workshops on topics related to the main c- ference. Our goals were threefold: 1. Put together a high-quality workshop program consisting of a few focused wo- shops that would provide ample time for discussion, thus enabling presenters to quickly advance their work and workshop attendees to quickly get an idea of - going work in selected research areas. 2. Provide a more complete picture of ongoing work by not only including technical workshops, but also workshops on business and user aspects. We expected that this multi-viewpoint approach would be an added value as technology, business m- els, and user experiences are usually interrelated. 3. Create a breeding ground for submissions for MOBILWARE 2010 and beyond.

It is becoming quite clear that there will be important technological advances in - bile and wireless connectivity, known as third-/fourth-generation (3G and 4G) mobile telecommunications systems. As a result we will be surrounded by ever-growing m- tidomain (technical and administrative) heterogeneous communications in both wired and wireless networks. This resulting environment deals with communication in m- tizoned networks, where people, devices, appliances and servers are connected to each other via different kinds of networks. Networks will be pervasive, ubiquitous, multis- vice, multioperatorand multiaccess. The mobility trend will also be spurred forward by the growing availability of mobile-enabled handheld devices. Mobile systems are expected to provide mobile users with cost-effective, secure, yet ubiquitous service access anywhere and anytime. Users will then continue to enjoy the new-found freedom mobile access provides and will have increasingly high exp- tations of mobility-aware applications that should be capable of seamlessly supporting the mobile lifestyle. The papers in this volume discuss issues from models, platforms, and architectures for mobility-aware systems to security, mobile agent technologies, sensitive com- nications, context awareness, mobile applications and management. They cover both practical experience and novel research ideas and concepts.

AMBINET INTELLIGENCE AND INTERNET OF THINGS The book explores long-term implementation techniques and research paths of ambient intelligence and the Internet of Things that meet the design and application requirements of a variety of modern and real-time applications. Working environments based on the emerging technologies of ambient intelligence (AmI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) are available for current and future use in the diverse field of applications. The AmI and IoT paradigms aim to help people achieve their daily goals by augmenting physical environments using networks of distributed devices, including sensors, actuators, and computational resources. Because AmI-IoT is the convergence of numerous technologies and associated research fields, it takes significant effort to integrate them to make our lives easier. It is asserted that Am I can successfully analyze the vast amounts of contextual data obtained from such embedded sensors by employing a variety of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques and that it will transparently and proactively change the environment to conform to the requirements of the user. Over time, the long-term research goals and implementation strategies could meet the design and application needs of a wide range of modern and real-time applications. The 13 chapters in Ambient Intelligence and Internet of Things: Convergent Technologies provide a comprehensive knowledge of the fundamental structure of innovative cutting-edge AmI and IoT technologies as well as practical applications. Audience The book will appeal to researchers, industry engineers, and students in artificial and ambient intelligence, the Internet of Things, intelligent systems, electronics and communication, electronics instrumentations, and computer science.
