Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this jOint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 40 (thesis year 1995) a total of 10,746 thesis titles from 19 Canadian and 144 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 40 reports theses submitted in 1995, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Correctly functioning evaluation systems directly influence the efficient and effective planning and implementation of projects and the achievement of organisational objectives. This book critically analyses the results of research dedicated to mixed intelligent systems for project evaluation, taking into account the current state of knowledge in the field of project management. It argues for the need to move away from classical concepts and deploy interdisciplinary research methods in the development of comprehensive project evaluation systems. Considering contemporary issues relating to project evaluation, the author deals with both quantitative and qualitative evaluation methods and the problems surrounding systems that integrate them, before discussing the process of modelling mixed intelligent systems. Mixed Intelligent Systems makes a thought-provoking case for harnessing interdisciplinary methods and new ideas in project management research when developing evaluation systems.

In this book, we focus on intelligent systems that are based on the integration of expert systems, hypermedia, and data-base technologies, for together they offer a rich environment for creating computer applications that can increase productivity enormously and act as intelligent assistants. Though hypermedia and expert systems technologies date back thirty or more years as independent technologies, it has only been in the last three years that their paths have fully converged, offering system developers a flexible environment that takes advantage of existing information and data. The combination of hypermedia and expert systems is quite attractive as it leads to overall increases in productivity.

Advances in digital technology have swept away worn assumptions concerning information access, knowledge capture, and business practice. The new order has been proclaimed a second industrial revolution. Amidst the ferment, a steady stream of publications has reported on computer systems, network standards, and online tactics. Despite the wealth of information—or perhaps because of it—there has been a dearth of frameworks to organize the myriad tools, applications, and strategies. This book presents a panoramic view, filters the melody from the noise, and offers pointers toward the future. The primer begins with an overview of key techniques and applications. This is followed by guideposts to orient the newcomer to the virtual frontier. For members of the digital economy, the book offers global models to assess the environment, devise a competitive strategy, and construct an enterprise system. The volume provides a compact survey of Internet technologies and their role in personal productivity as well as corporate advantage. The manual can serve as a guide to emerging trends for the general reader, or as an aid to strategic planning for the decision maker. The handbook should interest readers in all walks of life and roles at work, from front-line employees and seasoned professionals to senior executives and policy makers. The book is also addressed to students of all ages with an interest in the evolution of our digital society.
