"An Interdisciplinary Approach to Aging, Biohacking and Technology focuses on a broad range of issues that covers everything from the most basic ways technology and biohacking influence people's everyday lives to concerns about equity, globalization, and how we humans produce, consume, and are consumed by our technologies. This edited collection looks at the intersection between technology and aging, addressing the ways in which technology affects individuals, groups, local communities, and entire populations. Contributions from a range of disciplines including sociology, philosophy, communications, medicine, and religion provide interdisciplinary perspectives, addressing questions such as 'What is the impact of technology on adult bodies, our well-being, and our safety?' The book explores risks such as surveillance technology, body modification and the internet as well as issues in the aging journey such as the body and its modification; communication, privacy, and surveillance; gerontechnology and aging in place. Critically examining the journey of ageing and exploring techniques such as biohacking, this book is for students studying ageing and technology, including courses such as psychology, sociology, philosophy, cultural studies, health studies and gerontology. It will also be of interest to scholars curious about an interdisciplinary approach to age and technology"--

Digital Health Technology For Better Aging written by Giuseppe Andreoni and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021 with categories.

This book describes the multidisciplinary approach needed to tackle better aging. Aging populations are one of the 21st century's biggest challenges. National health systems are forced to adapt in order to provide adequate and affordable care. Innovation, driven by digital technology, is a key to improving quality of life and encouraging healthy living. Well-designed technology keeps people empowered, independent, and mobile; however, despite widespread adoption of ICT in day-to-day life, digital health technologies have yet to catch on. To this end, technology needs to be effective, usable, cheap, and designed to ensure the security of the managed data. In the era of mHealth, mobile technology, and social design, this book describes, in six sections, the collaboration of polytechnic know-how and social science and health sectors in the creation of a system for encouraging people to engage in healthy behavior and achieve a better quality of life.

Information Technology For Active Ageing written by Cristhian Parra and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Computers and older people categories.

Active Ageing aims to foster a physically, mentally and socially active lifestyle as a person ages. It is a complex, multi-faceted problem that involves a variety of different actors, such as policy makers, doctors, care givers, family members, friends and, of course, older adults. This review aims to understand the role of a new actor, which increasingly plays the role of enabler and facilitator, i.e., that of the technology provider. The review specifically focuses on Information Technology (IT), with a particular emphasis on software applications, and on how IT can prevent decline, compensate for lost capabilities, aid care, and enhance existing capabilities. The analysis confirms the crucial role of IT in Active Ageing, shows that Active Ageing requires a multidisciplinary approach, and identifies the need for better integration of hardware, software, the environment and the involved actors.

Postphenomenological Methodologies written by Jesper Aagaard and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-08-15 with Education categories.

This edited volume is the first publication to tackle the issue of researching human-technology relations from a methodological postphenomenological perspective. While the ‘traditional’ phenomenology of the 20th century, with figures like Husserl, Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty, provided valuable insights into the formal structures of essence, being and embodiment, etc. their mode of philosophizing mostly involved abstract ‘pure’ thinking. Although rooted in this tradition, the postphenomenological approach to the study of human-technology relations emphasizes the “empirical turn” and interdisciplinary work in the field of philosophy – and reaches out to other disciplines like anthropology, education, media studies, and science and technology studies (STS). The contributors discuss what it means for the field of postphenomenology to be empirically based and what kind of methodology is required in order for researchers to go out and study human-technology relations in this perspective. In many disciplines, methodology refers to the analytical approach taken – e.g. the analytical concepts you employ to make an analysis; in postphenomenology, these might include concepts such as multistability, variation, or mediation. In a discipline like anthropology, it also refers to reflections over the methods researchers use to approach an empirical field. Methods can include interviews of different kinds, participant observations, surveys, and auto-ethnography. Furthermore, methodology can include ethical issues tied to doing research in an empirical field. These practical aspects are not separate from, but rather connected to, theoretical approaches. This book ties together the methods, ethics, and theories of postphenomenology in a groundbreaking volume on methodology. With postphenomenological studies of education, digital media, biohacking, health, robotics, and skateboarding as points of reference, the authors of this volume, in twelve chapters, provide new perspectives on what a comprehensive postphenomenological research methodology must consist of.

Biohackers written by Alessandro Delfanti and has been published by Pluto Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-07 with Science categories.

Biohackers explores fundamental changes occurring in the circulation and ownership of scientific information. Alessandro Delfanti argues that the combination of the ethos of 20th century science, the hacker movement and the free software movement is producing an open science culture which redefines the relationship between researchers, scientific institutions and commercial companies. Biohackers looks at the emergence of the citizen biology community "DIYbio", the shift to open access by the American biologist Craig Venter and the rebellion of the Italian virologist Ilaria Capua against WHO data-sharing policies. Delfanti argues that these biologists and many others are involved in a transformation of both life sciences and information systems, using open access tools and claiming independence from both academic and corporate institutions.

Bio Inspired Innovation And National Security written by National Defense University and has been published by NDU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10 with History categories.

Despite the vital importance of the emerging area of biotechnology and its role in defense planning and policymaking, no definitive book has been written on the topic for the defense policymaker, the military student, and the private-sector bioscientist interested in the "emerging opportunities market" of national security. This edited volume is intended to help close this gap and provide the necessary backdrop for thinking strategically about biology in defense planning and policymaking. This volume is about applications of the biological sciences, here called "biologically inspired innovations," to the military. Rather than treating biology as a series of threats to be dealt with, such innovations generally approach the biological sciences as a set of opportunities for the military to gain strategic advantage over adversaries. These opportunities range from looking at everything from genes to brains, from enhancing human performance to creating renewable energy, from sensing the environment around us to harnessing its power.
