The purpose of this book is to illustrate a selection of biological prop erties of bacteria that reveal them as important living beings. We have primarily addressed readers who have had some previous educa tion in the natural sciences, and we have assumed a modest under standing of elementary chemical and biological principles. Our aim is to provide abrief survey of bacterial forms and structures, placing special emphasis on the activities of bacteria in their environment and some important interrelations within it. Bacterial ecobiology is the study of those aspects of bacteria that influence, and are in fluenced by, environmental phenomena. Some material traditionally covered in standard texts-such as medi cal bacteriology and immunology, applied bacteriology, and bacterial classification-will not be found here, because it is our opinion that these are peripheral to the idea of ecobiology and because numerous excellent treatments of this material are readily available. There is also no formal presentation ofbacterial genetics or of molecular biology per se in this book. However, mention of phenomena involved in these subjects is made where considered appropriate.

An Introduction to Microbiology for Nurses is an introductory text on microbiology for nurses, written in simple language and restricting those sections on the fundamentals of bacteriology (for example, the physiology of bacteria) to a minimum. Instead of presenting systematic bacteriology and describing organisms genus by genus, disease-causing bacteria are considered together in each particular part of the human body. Only the common and important infections are included. Comprised of 16 chapters, this book begins with a historical background on bacteriology, followed by a discussion on the biology of bacteria. A classification of bacteria is then presented, and infections caused by bacteria are described. Subsequent chapters focus on body defenses against bacterial infections; killing of bacteria through disinfection and sterilization; antibacterial therapy; and collection of bacteriological specimens as part of bacteriological diagnosis. Infections of the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, and the nervous system are also analyzed. The final chapter is devoted to elementary parasitology. This monograph is intended for nurses interested in learning more about microbiology and bacteriology.

"Microorganisms include bacteria, actinomycetes, yeasts, molds, and viruses, among which bacteria are the most prevalent in nature, accounting for 90%-95% of microorganisms. Some microorganisms are visible to the naked eye, such as mushrooms, Ganoderma lucidum, etc. Other microorganisms are "acellular organisms" composed of a few components, such as nucleic acids and proteins. Microorganisms are tiny and closely related to humans, comprised of a variety of beneficial and harmful species. The new coronavirus (2019-nCOV) that broke out in 2019 is a large virus family that is highly infectious. The rapid spread of 2019-nCOV globally has made the public recognize the importance of microorganisms in medicine, as well as their involvement in food, industry, agriculture, environmental protection, sports and many other fields. The present book revolves around the introduction to microorganisms and reviews relevant achievements in the field. The book is arranged in six important sections, including (i) quantitative optical microscopy in microbiology, (ii) introduction to important yeast genera in food biotechnology, (iii) nitrogen fixation and plant growth promotion by rhizobia with major emphasis on soybeans in Asia, (iv) endophytic fungus Piriformospora indica and its interaction with horticultural plants, (v) biodiversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in tropical Indonesia, and (vi) root rot and continuous cropping obstacles. This book provides important support for graduate students and researchers in the study of microorganisms while summarizing some new advances, particularly in rhizobia"--

Pharmaceutical Monographs, Second Edition, Volume 1: An Introduction to Microbiology provides information pertinent to the behavior of cells during growth and considers the factors affecting growth. This book discusses the relevance of cell growth to applied aspects of bacteriology. Organized into four chapters, this edition begins with an overview of the main features of the anatomy of the bacterial cell. This text then presents the chemical reactions that occur in the bacterial cell and are responsible for the breakdown of food supplies. Other chapters consider the synthesis of new cells and the formation of by-products, which are catalyzed by enzymes. This book discusses as well the properties and cultivation of the more important organisms encountered in medicine and pharmacy. The final chapter deals with the methods for the identification of the common medical bacteria. This book is a valuable resource for undergraduate students of pharmacy and allied subjects. Bacteriologists and microbiologists will also find this book useful.
