Excerpt from An Introduction to English Economic History and Theory It should be added that, in regard to the two im portant subjects of craft organization and the canonist doctrine, further consideration has led the author to a somewhat different judgment, and, he believes, a more adequate statement in the second Part. The accounts, therefore, given in this first Part of the earlier history of these matters, while, it is hoped, not incorrect so far as they go, need to be supplemented by the discussion of their subsequent history in later chapters. Excerpt from Economics an Introduction for the General Reader AN apology is needed for adding another to the large num ber of books that attempt to' deal with the whole subject matter of Economics in a single volume. I offer two pleas in extenuation. The first is that nearly all existing introduc tions to the subject are intended primarily for the University student. The pious wish is generally expressed that they may be of use also to the general reader; but the general reader's special needs and opportunities are seldom borne in mind. His needs are different, inasmuch as he has not the guidance of a teacher and the leisure of the student; on the other hand, his opportunities are some compensation for these disadvan tages, since he has usually a practical interest in the economic system and an experience of its working, which the academic student lacks. It seemed, therefore, worth while to try to do for the economic organization as a whole what Bagehot and Mr. Hartley Withers have done for a part of it, the credit system to explain the principles of its construction and working in the language of ordinary life, and with reference to the experience and interests of the ordinary man. While it would need a Bagehot to succeed, I hope that the mere attempt will have done something to make it easier for the general reader to perceive the bearing of economic studies on the political and social problems in which he is interested. Excerpt from An Introduction to the Industrial and Social History of England This text-book is intended for college and high-school classes. Most of the facts stated in it have become, through the researches and publications of recent years, such commonplace knowledge that a reference to authority in each case has not seemed meces sary. Statements on more doubtful points, and such personal opinions as I have had occasion to express, although not sup ported by references, are based on a somewhat careful study of the sources. To each chapter is subjoined a bibliographical paragraph with the titles of the most important secondary authorities. These works will furnish a fuller account of the matters that have been treated in outline in this book, indicate the original sources, and give opportunity and suggestions for further study. An introductory chapter and a series of narra tive paragraphs prefixed to other chapters are given with the object of correlating matters of economic and social history with other aspects of the life of the nation. My obligation and gratitude are due, as are those of all later students', to the group of scholars who have within our own time laid the foundations of the study of economic history, and whose names and books will be found referred to in the bibliographical paragraphs. Excerpt from Economic Performance: An Introduction to Economics Section III utilizes the material, revised and brought up to date, which previously appeared as Economic Development.1 In it I acknowledged my unusually large debt to other economists, so that I shall not repeat my thanks for the generous help that I have received. But I must again men tion my increasing indebtedness to the Economics Department of City College, which continues to have my developing ideas inflicted upon them on all possible occasions. So many in the Department have helped in so many ways that it would be quite unfair at this time to single anyone out for special thanks with the exception of Elliot Zupnick, who has worked closely with me for the last year or so, commenting on the entire manu script, attending to a great many details, and providing substantial drafts of the two Appendices (though the final responsibility for them is, of course, mine). The contribution of my wife, no economist but a remarkable editor, has steadily increased. In fact, in all fairness I must this time confess that, were it not for her help, this volume would have been infinitely less comprehensible and have appeared far less rapidly.
