Excerpt from An Introduction to the Calculus In the following pages an attempt has been made to present the elements of the Calculus in a way that will appeal to comparatively immature students. The reasoning is based essentially on the graphical representation of a function, and it is hoped that students who have obtained a firm grasp of the meaning of such representation will be able to gain, without serious difficulty, a right apprehension of the meaning of a differential coefficient. I have deliberately abstained from crowding the book with diagrams, because I assume that before the student begins the study of the Calculus he will be quite familiar with the methods of graphing the ordinary functions and will have reached the stage at which he can at once form a mental picture of such graphs. From the educational point of view the graph is not so much an end in itself as an aid to the comprehension of the variation of a function. In all practical applications of the Calculus the consideration of a differential coefficient as the measure of a rate of variation is of the utmost importance, and this aspect of a differential coefficient can be very readily understood by any one who is familiar with graphical work. The only satisfactory way, however, by which the conception of a rate can be adapted to practical uses is, in my judgment, the method of limits; I have therefore used that method throughout the book. Excerpt from Introduction to the Differential Calculus A Constant is a quantity that has, or is supposed to have, a definite fixed value. A Variable is a quantity that is, or is supposed to be, continually changing in value. In general, constants are represented by the first letters of the alphabet, and variables by the last; but they should not, therefore, be confused with the known and unknown quantities of Algebra, which, in general, are constants. Excerpt from An Introduction to the Infinitesimal Calculus: Notes for the Use of Science and Engineering Students The principal change 111 this edition will be found in the treatment of the exponential and logarithm. Six years ago few students began the study of the Calculus without having already completed a course in Algebra, including the Theory of Infinite Series. It is now realised that in making this demand the mathematical teacher was asking more than was necessary. The principles underlying the Calculus, in so far as they can be examined in such a course as this, offer little difficulty. N 0 more than an elementary knowledge of Algebra and Trigonometry is required for their discussion; and a real grasp of the meaning of differentiation and integration can be obtained by very many to whom the subject of Infinite Series would appear extremely obscure. Excerpt from An Introduction to Mathematical Analysis A regular course in calculus, following this, can proceed more rapidly than usual, include more advanced topics, and give a fine grasp: the principles and processes have become an old story. And the regular course in analytic geometry can be devoted to a genuine study of the geometrical properties of loci, since most of the type equations, basic formulas, and calculus methods are already familiar. Excerpt from Elementary Textbook on the Calculus The guiding principle in the selection and presentation of the topics in the following pages has been the ever increasing pressure on the present-day curriculum, especially in applied science, to limit the study of mathematics to a minimum of time and to the topics that are deemed of most immediate use to the professional course for which it is preparatory.
