This process of analysis is the only method by which the rules and formulae of the science can be ascertained and demonstrated, and on which its practical application must ultimately rest. Works on the doctrine of annuities, however, being necessarily of so technical and abstruse a character, possess few or no attractions except to actuaries, or to the comparatively few who may entertain a predilection for such enquiry. To the far greater number of readers, who are not sufficiently initiated in the knowledge of algebra, they are almost wholly useless.
