Excerpt from An Introductory Lecture: Delivered at the Opening of the Thirty-First Session of the Medical College of Ohio; November 4th, 1850 Prof. Bell, Dear Sir: In accordance with the desire of the Students of the Medical College of Ohio, we, the undersigned, were appointed a Committee, to solicit a copy of your very excellent Introductory, for publication. A compliance with the above request, will meet the approbation of the entire Class. Gentlemen: I have been honored with your letter of the 9th inst., in which you ask, on the part of the class, for a copy of my Introductory lecture, with a view to its publication. Gratified as I am by this early mark of confidence in my opinions on the relative position, attributes and range of Medicine, and on the duties of those who profess to teach it, I cheerfully comply with the wish of "the entire class," so kindly conveyed by you, and I place the manuscript of my lecture at your disposal. Excerpt from An Introductory Lecture, Delivered at the Opening of the Forty-Eight Course of Lectures in the Medical College of Ohio, 1857 We have convened this evening for the purpose Of opening in due form, the thirty-eighth course of lectures in the Med ical College of Ohio. Allow me, gentlemen, in the name of the faculty, to welcome you to this institution, and to give you the voluntary pledge, that it will be our most ardent desire to promote your welfare, while you sojourn among us. The Medical College of Ohio bears an ancient and honor able name. For thirty-seven years she has stood before the profession, and now has her numerous alumni scattered throughout the West and South. Her faculty, at various periods, has embraced many of the ablest men Of our country, - few schools indeed can exhibit a brighter galaxy in years gone by, than this. The names of Drake, Eberle, Locke, Mussey, Moorhead, Harrison, Shotwell, Cobb, were chief among those who made a name and reputation for this school, equal to any of her Sister institutions. But many of these jewels of our profession have, in the fullness of time, been gathered to their final homes. Drake, Eberle, Shotwell, Harrison, Locke, have passed to that un discovered country, from whose bourne no traveler returns. The pendant boughs of the weeping willow point in sorrowing silence to the oblivion of the tomb but the fame Of those we loved and honored, lives on fresh in the great heart of our profession. Excerpt from An Introductory Lecture, Delivered in the Medical College of Ohio: Session 1860-1 It has been an established custom for the Dean, or some other member of the Faculty, at the commencement of a course of medical lectures, to address the class upon any subject which might seem appropriate to the occasion. I endeavored to convince my colleagues that an address from some one of them would be more acceptable than from my self; but, they would neither acknowledge the force of my arguments, nor lay aside their native modesty. I do not propose to discuss any branch or special subject in medicine. But, as some of us will be associated during the four long months that are before us, it may not be nu profitable to consider for a short time our individual and rel ative duties. The professor and the student have both a laborious task before them, requiring not only the constant exercise of their reasoning faculties, but a pleasurable state of feeling and-an unfaltering will. To stop by the way side and talk with the adventurer about the land of gold, and count the many miles that may intervene, will prove to be an ineffectual way to se cure its treasures. The student in pursuit of knowledge is in a similar situation. He has a thousand obstacles to over come, requiring industry, patience, and a resolute purpose. It is a common remark, that while the physician is dis charging his duty, he is engaged ih a conflict with death. Such a claim in behalf of the profession we should esteem the height of presumption.
