Excerpt from An Introductory Sociology Since group life depends on, or really consists in, interaction and contact, it is necessary to study the forms of such action or social processes. These are co-operation and opposition, the latter being divided into competition and conflict. From these develop other processes, such as the division Of labor, the formation of social classes, the settlement of conflict by accommodation, and the merging of persons and groups Oi-divergent cultures into a com mon group with a common culture, the change which we call assimilation. The same interaction looked at from the angle Of the individual determines what is called personality. Personality is that combina tion of ideas, attitudes, and habits which the individual develops as he plays his part within the boundaries Of various groups: fam ily, neighborhood, fraternity, trade union, merchants' association, political party, church body, and SO on. Excerpt from Introduction to Sociology Sociology claims to be the science of society, and the question immediately arises: What is society, or a society, this object which is to be studied? To-day many writers talk freely of society, and mean by it on one page, humanity on the next, a family, or a race; on the next, social intercourse. Those writers who regard society as an organism are perhaps the most careless in this matter, and confuse the reader by including in said organism at one time the world as a whole, and again, without notice of change, some small group of men who have united for a definite purpose. Excerpt from Introduction to the Science of Sociology The materials upon which this book is based have been collected from a wide range of sources and represent the observation and reflection of men who have seen life from very different points of view. This was necessary in order to bring into the perspective of a single volume the whole wide range of social organization and human life which is the subject-matter of a science of society. At the same time an effort has been made to bring this material within the limits of a very definite series of sociological conceptions which suggest, at any rate, where they do not clearly exhibit, the fundamental relations of the parts to one another and to the concepts and contents of the volume as a whole. The Introduction to the Science of Sociology is not conceived as a mere collection of materials, however, but as a systematic treatise. On the other hand, the excerpts which make up the body of the book are not to be regarded as mere illustrations. In the context in which they appear, and with the headings which indicate their place in the volume, they should enable the student to formulate for himself the principles involved. An experience of some years, during which this book has been in preparation, has demonstrated the value to the teacher of a body of materials that are interesting in themselves and that appeal to the experience of the student. If students are invited to take an active part in the task of interpretation of the text, if they are encouraged to use the references in order to extend their knowledge of the subject-matter and to check and supplement classroom discussion by their personal observation, their whole attitude becomes active rather than passive. Students gain in this way a sense of dealing at first hand with a subject-matter that is alive and with a science that is in the making. Under these condi tions sociology becomes a common enterprise in which all members of the class participate; to which, by their observation and investiga tion, they can and should make contributions. Excerpt from An Introduction to Sociology The reader who has no previous acquaintance with the literature of sociology will probably be considerably surprised at the immense strides made in the scientific analysis of social phenomena during the last half cen tury. He will also be gratified to learn, that while this country is backward in almost every other science, and in scientific research generally, especially as compared with Germany, in sociology, thanks to the labors of Lester F. Ward, America holds a foremost place. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from An Introduction to Educational Sociology As sociologists have succeeded in delimiting their own field of labor they have reached a fair consensus of opinion concerning the basis of all sociological study. The point of departure in such study is the social group, whether the group be large or small, temporary or permanent, simple or complex. It is therefore the social group as an educational unit upon which we must build an educational sociology. Excerpt from An Introduction to Sociology, for Social Workers, and General Readers I dwell on these points of method partly because sociology is a comparatively new study (in spite of the labours of the Sociological Society), partly because young scholars are inclined to be too timid, afraid of mak ing mistakes or of breaking with tradition. And the issue affects that wider circle of readers who are eager to study social questions but hesitate because of their lack, or supposed lack, of qualifications of an academ1e kind. There are many men and women, (those e.g. Associated with the w.e.a. And many others who have not even a remote connection with Universities) whose mental habits are quite consistent with an approach to psychology or sociology, if they can be brought to realize that the subject-matter of these studies lies all round them, and needs only to be selected in the light of large principles. One might go further: for it is now apparent that philosophy can only be created, and re-created, when its roots are spread abroad in the common soil, but to pursue this theme would carry us beyond the range of a preface.
