Physical environment design plays an important role in psychological healing value. So the research focus on Analysis and design colour, daylight, art, sound, and natural view in a range of key areas: the lobby, reception, waiting area, and children consulting room in a type-B health-care building. During the last three decades, the Iraqi health system radically deteriorated as a result of major wars, economic recession, disastrous military adventures, and political factors. As well as, Kurdistan is a part of Iraq which still suffers from a continuous neglect of the health system. In fact, the environmental psychology is not taken into consideration in the designs of healthcare buildings. Therefore, Kurdistan needs a new design of healthcare to continue raising the level of the health-care system. Painting art alongside some parts of walls in waiting area psychologically help patients not to feel the long waiting time. It could help patients to interact with artistic environment positively through imagining and thinking which helps to divert them from focusing on their distress. Colours have influence on people's cognition, emotions, and behaviour. Also, psychosomatic medicine affirms that psychological factors may cause physical disorders such as stress causing headaches, anger affecting the stomach, anxiety may increase heartbeat and so on (Mahnke 2012). Environmental colour design for each space has a positive physiological effect to users. It has been shown that the use of colour therapy could improve the wellbeing of the occupants.

For all of the tremendous advances in medicine and treatment the world has seen in the modern era, the human body’s ability to heal itself remains a (literally) vital and often overlooked facet of healthcare. Through the use of emotional design, aimed at transforming healthcare environments, such as waiting rooms, in such a way as to boost the emotional wellbeing of patients, and thus their general attitudes, including in regard to their own healing processes, medical institutions can improve outcomes for the people they treat while simultaneously lowering overall costs. Design, as an inherently transdisciplinary, problem-solving activity, is well-suited to this task. And when combined with a field of study such as neuroscience, which can literally map out the perceptions that lead to the experience of particular emotions, healthcare environments can be transformed into spaces (through such innovations as Kansei engineering) that then subsequently transform the people who rely on them the most, leading to more efficiency and less red ink.

All architectural spaces have the ability to support or hinder each person's wellbeing along their life journey. For patients, this idea becomes even more relevant. How are the spaces surrounding them, helping to aid in their healing journey? Healing is an ongoing journey towards a healthy state of living that is achieved with physical body healing, spiritual, cultural, and emotional healing practices, and is often measured by reaching certain stages in prognosis or milestones in recovery. Healing is a very complex and highly subjective practice. Many studies have discussed the linkages between the environment and mental and physical healing, and emphasized the importance of healing design research and of improving the quality of space design for people's healing. Since the mid to late 1900s, there has been ample research surrounding the improvement of hospitals and healthcare facilities to promote more significant healing for patients. Research has been conducted on various interrelated topics surrounding healing, including the negative impact of stress on healing, the benefits of nature on recovery, and the connection to the five senses during the healing process. The research surrounding healing and health care facilities is vast and dense. However, what happens to patients once they leave the hospital? How do they transition back to normalcy and return home from the hospital in a relaxed manner? This transition is typically not easy and has been identified as the area of focus and investigation for this thesis project. The motivation for this thesis project is to bridge the gap between hospital and home to ease the recovery process for people with physical conditions. This void is addressed through the identification of a set of five categories of design principles and the testing of these principles in the design of the transitional facility specifically designed to ease the healing journey and support people as they transition back to a sense of normalcy/remission before returning home. Background research on healthcare design, as well as site visits, case studies, and patient interviews, have created the basis for the identification of the healing design principles. In conclusion, this thesis project proposes solutions geared towards addressing the void in the healthcare industry in relation to the transition between the hospital and home. This thesis allowed for the compilation of a substantial list of healing design principles that can be applied to any environment. A transitional facility typology is proposed as a possible solution to this issue in Detroit. Through the careful design of a transitional healing facility, this project offers a new perspective on how architectural spaces can support the healing journey to promote ease and remission. This exploratory study will identify elements of the interior environment of behavioral healthcare facilities that impact patient sense of control from the perspective of their caregivers and healthcare designers and how that impacts patients' well-being. This study will also explore what measures can be taken to modify the built environment and make it more flexible to increase patients' sense of control. The goals driving this study focus on contributing to the body of knowledge and research in the field of behavioral and mental healthcare design, raising awareness of the potential benefits that improved design could bring to state mental health facilities, and introducing a potential solution to improve quality of life for individuals being treated within state funded mental health facilities. Knowledge and treatment practices for mental illness have progressed and evolved throughout history, however, the field of research concerning mental health facility design is relatively new which has created a gap in knowledge about the impacts of behavioral and mental health design. Informed design has immense potential to improve wellbeing, quality of life, and treatment success for patients being treated for severe mental illnesses (Ulrich, 2001). State funded behavioral healthcare facilities are not only short of funding but are often housed in buildings that fall short from what is needed for patients' wellbeing and successful recovery, forcing potentially fragile individuals into spaces that do not support their needs could bring more harm than good. Therapy and medical care have been evolving rapidly while the architecture and interior design of these facilities stay the same where, in some cases, patients are being "handicapped" by the design of mental health facilities (Chrysikou, 2013)

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the literature on healthcare environments, discuss the definition of a healing environment and the components that define the space and to gain a broader understanding of the relation between the built environment and its impact on patient and staff health outcomes. Another purpose of this thesis is to design a healing environment with a holistic approach integrating the concept of the physical environment as a therapeutic resource and the use of nature in the healing process. Based on observation and analysis, Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa does not have a healing environment conducive to physical, emotional and spiritual healing. Such an environment for patients, families and staff at Mary Greeley Medical Center will provide a peaceful and relaxing escape from the stresses of pain, suffering, illness and the work environment. The literature review for this study addresses healing environments and how incorporating nature and healing gardens into healthcare facilities provides therapeutic benefits and assists with the healing process. The literature review also addresses built environments in relation to health outcomes for both patients and staff. Also included is general information about health care facilities addressing issues such as sustainability and marketing opportunities. An analysis of the existing site was based on observations and photographic documentation. A survey was also distributed and completed by those who use Mary Greeley Medical Center. All of this information was considered for the design and construction of the proposed healing environment for Mary Greeley Medical Center. The study resulted in invaluable information for providing design solutions to ensure that healthcare environments created by interior designers, architects and hospital administrators contribute to and promote the healing process.

"Secret Gardens of Freedom, A New Plan for Mason Clinic Campus" responds to the need for better forensic mental health care facilities in New Zealand. The Waitemata District Health Board Mason Clinic is a regional forensic mental health facility located in Pt Chevalier in Auckland, bordered on the west by the Oakley Reserve and the east by the Unitec campus. The site is approximately four hectares and currently accommodates 106 beds across a number of individual units with varying security levels and functionality. The long-term plan is to increase the capacity of the site by replacing the existing buildings with new units. The challenge in this research lies in successfully meeting the needs of good architecture and good mental health care and the question of how architecture could contribute to the treatment process of service users. This includes the consideration of new models of care world-wide and specific models of care in New Zealand. Currently, the majority of the population at Mason Clinic Campus belongs to the Maori community and therefore cultural aspects need to be taken into account for New Zealand's specific model of care. This design research endeavours to reveal fresh ideas that bring architecture into play in regard to the environment and treatment of service users. Amongst various new therapy topics and ideas, this thesis specifically focuses on creating more humane indoor/outdoor spaces, healing gardens, and courtyards with which the service users can engage. This study will also focus on creating a carefully designed site landscape in order to engage the natural senses of users as one of the main areas of their therapy process. The interface of the whole campus with public and neighbouring areas is also taken into account for the influence it exerts upon the public mindset in relation to mental health. This thesis culminates in the design of units for a range of care levels and requirements in a semi-modular format. A community zone containing a series of buildings is considered to be the main interface of the public with service users. Since the master planning of Mason Clinic is already underway over the next two decades, this research is an attempt to look into aspects, which could otherwise be overlooked as a result of budget and time constraints during the actual design process.

The purpose of this thesis was to explore the potential of a designed physical outdoor environment to improve the social environment and thereby enhance the psychological healing process at Psychiatric institutions. Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital situated in Pretoria West served as a model for testing the hypothesis. The physical and social environment at Weskoppies was analyzed through observations, interviews and literature research. Findings from analysis and theoretical research regarding the influences that physical and social outdoor environments have on mental health, were synthesized to establish design guidelines. These informed the design decision making process and assisted in the proposal of an outdoor environment with emotional healing potential. An open space framework and catalytic sketch plan was designed to illustrate the application of the design guidelines. The author found that an outdoor environment that encourage independence, purpose, consciousness, rest, connectedness and physical activities have the potential to enhance the psychological healing process. The open space framework and sketch plan proved that these guidelines can be accommodated on different scales. Copyright.

This research thesis was developed as a planning and design reference for mental health treatment centres. This text is intended to assist planners, designers, and health practitioners to optimize patient health and comfort by providing suitable environments to facilitate care and treatment. This thesis examines and provides guidance on security issues, environmental design, the cognitive environment, and site development. Sample facility plans are also provided to demonstrate the design principles advocated. The foreword examines the historical background of mental health treatment facilities in relation to the context of care. The continuing problem of the alienating and dehumanizing effects of psychiatric hospitals on patients is also addressed. Security requirements are investigated in relation to patients' rights and personal needs. This text also examines related fire safety requirements and design measures to minimize the risks of suicides, self injuries, and assaults. Environmental design issues, including lighting, color, acoustics, construction materials, air quality, and spatial relationships, are examined in relation to mental and physical health. Cognitive issues such as wayfinding, mental maps, symbolism, and perceptions of physical environments and architectural design are explored in relation to mental health treatment facilities. Earlier research suggests that patients have difficulty making the cognitive adjustment to typical mental health treatment facilities, and this can negatively effect their therapy and potential recovery. An illustrated questionnaire was developed to help determine the types of facilities patients can relate to and experience relative comfort. This questionnaire was used to examine perceptions of buildings and designs in relation to the provision of comfortable and healthy environments. The survey revealed that patients, health care providers, and students shared similar perceptions of the built environment, and that buildings possessing features generally associated with domestic buildings (houses) were considered more comfortable than other building types. In particular, buildings with pitched roofs and brick exteriors were considered most suggestive of comfort. Horizontal windows were preferred to more common vertically oriented windows. This effect was more pronounced when windows framed a pleasant natural view. Curved interior forms were also found to be suggestive of comfort. Past, current, and emerging patterns of site and facility development are reviewed in association with their environmental context. The role of nature in the healing process, from ancient Greece to recent discoveries, is also examined. The final chapter of this thesis is a demonstration of design principles with annotated drawings of a hypothetical inpatient unit and outpatient clinic. These drawings are provided to demonstrate an integration of thesis findings and design principles. These drawings are not a definitive design or prototype, because every site and building program are different and require their own design solution.
