Cloud profiling radars (CPRs) are designed to illuminate atmospheric clouds and estimate their water content and internal structure. Satellite based CPRs offer several advantages and have already been used to significantly improve scientific understanding of meteorology generally, but the physical nature of clouds makes them a challenging target to observe without large, expensive instruments. Adaptive remote sensing has the potential to enable smaller, cheaper systems to produce useful measurements alongside their larger predecessors. A Matlab simulation has been developed to investigate the benefits of adaptive remote sensing in the CPR use case. This simulation has the ability to adapt the radar’s pulse repetition frequency (PRF) in response to observed cloud column height as well as automatically identify and terminate low precision measurements to manage resources. The simulation has been tested using synthetic data derived from NASA’s GEOS5 system and real data derived from CloudSat’s operational history. The simulation has shown that adaptive remote sensing is capable of achieving resource savings and quality improvement in the CPR case which would make the use of highly resource constrained platforms for the CPR use case more feasible.

The Dugway Proving Ground radar wind profiler, a ground-based 404.37 MHz Doppler radar operated continuously through its FY91 evaluation period, providing 6-min and hourly wind profiles at 250 m intervals from 500 m to 10 km above ground level. Profiler performance was evaluated using a series of internal measures and through intercomparison with radiosonde-derived wind soundings. Results show profiler measurement precision comparable to that of radiosonde-derived wind data, but with greatly increased temporal resolution. Profiler spectra were examined during periods with strong wind shear, precipitation, and aircraft passage through the radar beams. These conditions caused no significant problems, although data quality was marginal or poor in strong convection or during very dry condition (dew points below -35 C). A problem with antenna element degradation was discovered, and corrective action has been initiated. Automated quality control algorithms were developed for the 6-min profiler data, and formats were developed for inclusion of wind profiler data in test data reports. Shutdown procedures were also developed to eliminate profiler interference with search and rescue satellites. Radar wind profiling is a promising remote sensing technology that offers significant, advantages over existing balloon-based wind sounding methods. Once frequency allocation issues are resolved, radar wind profiling is expected to become the preferred method for obtaining ballistic wind data.

In 1978, a spaceborne SAR was flown on the SEASAT satellite. It acquired high resolution images over many regions in North America and the North Pacific. The acquired data clearly demonstrate the capability of spaceborne SARs to: (1) image and track polar ice floes; (2) image ocean surfaces patterns including swells, internal waves, current boundaries, weather boundaries and vessels; and (3) image land features which are used to acquire information about the surfaces geology and land cover. In 1981, another SAR was flown on the second shuttle flight. This Shuttle Imaging Radar (SIR-A) acquired land and ocean images over many areas around the world. The emphasis of the SIR-A experiment was mainly toward geologic mapping. Some of the key results of the SIR-A experiment include: (1) imaging of subsurface features in the Western Desert of Egypt; (2) enhancement of the capability of observing geologic structural features and geomorphic features particularly in arid regions and heavily vegetated regions; and (3) observation of the short term dynamics (1 1/2 hours) of some ocean phenomena.
