This volume is a case study of education reform and innovation using technology that examines the issue from a wide variety of perspectives. It brings together the views and experiences of software designers, curriculum writers, teachers and students, researchers and administrators. Thus, it stands in contrast to other analyses of innovation that tend to look through the particular prisms of research, classroom practice, or software design. The Geometric Supposer encourages a belief in a better tomorrow for schools. On its surface, the Geometric Supposer provides the means for radically altering the way in which geometry is taught and the quality of learning that can be achieved. At a deeper level, however, it suggests a powerful metaphor for improving education that can be played out in many different instructional contexts.

The purpose of this investigation was to describe tenth grade students' views of the purposes of geometric proof within the context of their learning. Classroom observations, the curriculum, assessment tools, journal questions, and a preconceptions questionnaire were used to provide context for the views expressed by students from a single classroom. Eleven classroom episodes selected from the classroom observations were used to describe the instructional context as well as discourse among the students during group work. The episodes provided details about how and when the classroom teacher addressed various purposes of proofs involving geometry concepts throughout two instructional units on coordinate geometry proofs and two-column proofs. The episodes also consisted of student discourse relating to the purposes of geometric proof as students worked on assigned proof problems. The students' views were examined through journal questions given at the beginning of selected days and through a post-instruction questionnaire and individual interviews. There were three main findings of the study. First, several students experienced difficulty in expressing their views of the purposes of geometric proof when asked directly. One-third of the students could only list properties or theorems they encountered during the unit on geometric proof. However, when these students were asked to describe the purpose for each column, all of the students listed both explanation and verification. Second, the students expressed limited views of the purposes of proof, referring mainly to verification. Only a few students mentioned explanation, systematization, and communication. However, students generally referred to at least two purposes of proof (explanation, verification, and communication) when describing the proving process involved in coordinate geometry. Third, the students' views of various purposes of geometric proof were diverse. Recommendations for future research include the examination of students' views of the purposes of geometric proofs for students who use paragraph form and studies to investigate the development of students' views of the purposes of proof as they gain more experience with formal proof writing and other methods of proof.

Reasoning And Geometric Proof In Mathematics Education A Review Of The Literature written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with categories.

The purpose of this literature review is to examine the role that reasoning and geometric proof play in the teaching and learning of mathematics. Specifically, I explore four questions: 1) What reasoning capabilities do students need to be ready for proof? 2) What evidence is there to show that high school students are not successful with proof and hold misconceptions about the nature of proof? 3) How can teachers' beliefs and understandings contribute to students' proof abilities? 4) What can be done to promote mathematical reasoning and improve students' proof writing skills? Through a comparison of the theories of Piaget and van Hiele, I discuss how students acquire mathematical and geometric reasoning skills and how this relates to their readiness to produce formal proofs. I then discuss research findings, which indicate that students are not typically at a high enough van Hiele level to be successful with proof by the time they get to high school. Further research is presented which examines common geometric and proof misconceptions among students, and how this relates to proof achievement. Teacher proof-conceptions and achievement are also discussed, citing studies with elementary, middle, and high school preservice and inservice teachers, and how this may affect students' proof performance. Finally, I discuss ways in which preservice and inservice teachers can help their students improve their mathematical and geometric reasoning skills, thus furthering their proof comprehension and achievement.

The first objective of this study was to investigate the effects of the use of Geometer's Sketchpad (GSP) on students' achievement on traditional assessments in Geometry. The second objective of the study was to determine the impact of technology on students' attitudes towards geometry. This research was conducted in four geometry classes at a secondary school in Connecticut. Eighty-six students participated in this study. The control group was composed of one honors level class with 23 students and one academic level class with 19 students and was taught geometric constructions through the use of traditional tools, including a pair of compasses, straightedge, pencil, and paper. The experimental group was composed of one honors level class with 23 students and one academic level class with 21 students and was taught geometric constructions through the use of GSP. Each group performed constructions of the same geometric figures and were asked to make conjectures based on their findings. All students in the study were required to complete the same assessment and the same questionnaire describing their experience. This exploratory study did not find enough significant evidence to show that all high school students achieve at a higher rate through the use of GSP. There was some evidence that suggests that males' achievement might be higher through the use of GSP and further research should be done to investigate this conjecture. Across the board, students showed an increase in enjoyment and felt that their results were more accurate through the use of technology. Students also felt that their conjectures are easier to verify through technology rather than through the use of hand tools. These preliminary findings will be able to focus the attention of teachers what aspects they will have to consider if they want to implement dynamic geometry software in their classrooms. This exploratory study yielded preliminary data and could be used in the design of a full scale study.
