There is a growing number of teaching assistants (TAs) in mainstream schools (DCFS, 2009) and research is inconclusive about their efficacy at improving outcomes for children, including those at risk of exclusion (Groom and Rose, 2005; Tennant, 2001). It has been proposed that TAs do not have enough training for their roles (Russell et al, 2005). However, there is debate about the most appropriate adult training methods (Merriam et al, 2007). Nevertheless, several writers suggest that training can influence self efficacy and this can improve performance (Giallo and Little, 2003). A mixed methods design was implemented. Firstly, two fixed designs evaluated TA self efficacy following training and pupil behaviour following a TA delivered anger management intervention. However, due to design and implementation issues the data produced was very limited and conclusions could not be made. Secondly, a flexible design explored factors that influenced TAs' learning, behaviour and self efficacy. Data was collected from 14 mainstream secondary school TAs using evaluation forms and focus groups. A thematic analysis was carried out on this data. Themes regarding learning, confidence, training and self efficacy emerged from the data. The learning implied by some of the TAs referred to the acquisition and maintenance of terminology, developing different knowledge bases and the autonomy to adapt materials. Similarly, some of the TAs referred to having confidence mainly when they had some control over the situation. Training subthemes that seemed to influence TAs' learning and confidence were confirmation/ reassurance from others, parameters of training, iterative process of training and involvement in the process. Finally, TA self efficacy seems to have been influenced by Bandura's (1977) sources of information, outcome expectations and whole school support and norms. In conclusion, it is important to challenge unhelpful outcome expectations, develop whole school norms and the equality of TAs in schools. Furthermore, training of TAs should involve appropriate psychological paradigms from adult learning theories.

Over the last decade, teaching assistants (TAs) have become an established part of everyday classroom life. TAs are often used by schools to help low-attaining pupils and those with special educational needs. Yet despite the huge rise in the number of TAs working in UK classrooms, very little is known about their impact on pupils. This key and timely text examines the impact of TAs on pupils’ learning and behaviour, and on teachers and teaching. The authors present the provocative findings from the ground-breaking and seminal Deployment and Impact of Support Staff (DISS) project. This was the largest, most in-depth study ever to be carried out in this field. It critically examined the effect of TA support on the academic progress of 8,200 pupils, made extensive observations of nearly 700 pupils and over 100 TAs, and collected data from over 17,800 questionnaire responses and interviews with over 470 school staff and pupils. This book reveals the extent to which the pupils in most need are let down by current classroom practice. The authors present a robust challenge to the current widespread practices concerning TA preparation, deployment and practice, structured around a conceptually and empirically strong explanatory framework. The authors go on to show how schools need to change if they are to realise the potential of TAs. With serious implications not just for classroom practice, but also whole-school, local authority and government policy, this will be an indispensable text for primary, secondary and special schools, senior management teams, those involved in teacher training and professional development, policy-makers and academics.

Abstract: In the field of English language teaching, several studies have been conducted to examine the differences between native and non-native language teachers regarding pedagogical advantages and disadvantages (Samimy & Brutt-Griffler, 1999; Medgyes, 1999; Arva & Medgyes, 2000). Unfortunately, similar study is scant in the field of foreign language teaching in the United States, and important factors, such as teacher efficacy, were neglected in those studies. Teacher efficacy, defined as " ... the teachers' belief in his or her capability to organize and execute courses of action required to successfully accomplish a specific task in a particular context" (Tschannen-Moran, Woolfolk Hoy & Hoy, 1998), is a significant predictor of more effective teaching in many domains; nevertheless, no journal articles and only two dissertations (Shin, 2001; Chacon, 2002) were found directly relating to teacher efficacy in language teaching. Both studies revealed the effect of language proficiency on both teacher efficacy and teaching methodology; however, the efficacy beliefs of native teachers and the different efficacy beliefs between native and non-native teachers have been unexplored. This study aimed to investigate the differences between native and non-native foreign language teachers teaching at a large midwestern university. Primary areas of investigation were "teacher efficacy" and "teacher perceptions of language teaching." Teaching assistants from six language departments i.e. Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, German, French and Italian, were chosen in this study. Moreover, the researcher was interested in knowing how native and non-native language teachers were different in teaching less commonly taught languages, i.e. East Asian languages, versus in commonly taught languages, like Spanish. The data shows a positive connection between teachers' self-perceived ability in teaching the target language and level of efficacy. The influence of teaching experience, such as years of teaching and level of students' language proficiency on teachers' sense of efficacy was observed in this study. Moreover, native and nonnative language teachers from different language departments were also found different in such areas as teaching methods in the classroom, levels of instructional strategic efficacy or nativeship issues. The results indicated the necessarily to consider the differences between teachers of different language departments in future studies.

Written in an accessible and engaging manner, the book explores various theories of motivation from a range of perspectives, applying academic theory to real life classroom situations. Using a combination of case studies and empirical research, this book demonstrates how teachers and TAs can successfully enhance the motivation of their students through collaborative practice. Improving Pupils Motivation Together starts by introducing theories of learning and motivation and goes on to offer insight in areas including: Collaboration and ways to collaborate; Motivation and giftedness; Assessment for Learning; Learning goals and learning objectives; Common pupil responses; Research in Action. Improving Pupils Motivation Together is an ideal resource for both teachers and teaching assistants working with pupils who are difficult to motivate and who find learning challenging. Further, this book will be highly useful for teachers managing their support staff, and for trainee teachers looking to develop their skills in motivating and engaging pupils.
