The mechanisms of atomic transport in the supercooled liquid state (SLS) and the nature of glass transition have been challenging problems for decades. It is believed that collective atomic motion plays a key role in the dramatic slow-down of kinetics near the glass transition temperature Tg. Thus, understanding the mechanisms of atomic transport is directly linked to the understanding of the glass forming ability of metallic alloys. Measurements on both macroscopic and microscopic scales are required for the understanding of atomic motions in SLS and glasses. We have developed a nuclear magnetic resonance technique, the Be-9 spin alignment echo technique (SAE), to probe slow atomic motions on microscopic scales. Systems of focus are Vitreloy 1 and Vitreloy 4, two of the Zr-Ti-Ni-Cu-Be bulk metallic glasses with extraordinary glass forming ability. By combining SAE and diffusion measurements it was revealed that long-range transport of Be atoms in the SLS is due to two diffusion processes, one of these is single-atom hopping assisted by thermal fluctuation of spread-out free volume. However, collective motion of atomic clusters dominates in the SLS. Further understanding of the influence of composition and processing on such atomic motions could lead to the improvement of glass forming ability.

This report summarizes the work which was completed during the first four years of the research program (October 1, 1979 to September 30, 1983). (2) a magnetization study of the RE100-xAlx amorphous alloys (where RE is a rare earth element), (3) a NMR, magnetization and x-ray diffraction study of crystalline Fe3-xNixSi and Metglas 2605 CO (Fe67Co18B14Si1), (4) a NMR and magnetic susceptibility study of the Ca100-xAlx metallic glass system, (5) a magnetization study of some Co-Nb-B and Fe-Nb-B metallic glasses, (6) an EXAFS study of Metaglas 2605 CO and (7) a XANES study of the (Ni0.50Pt0.50)75P25 metallic glass system. In addition, this report described in complete detail the progress during the past year (October 1, 1983 to September 30, 1984) which includes: (1) a spin-echo NMR study of the atomic environment in the Fe100-xBx metallic glass system and (2) a low field magnetization study of the magnetic anisotropy in Metglas 2605 CO ribbons. Finally, this report describes the status of experiments currently in progress which includes: (1) optical properties of the Ni100-xPx metallic glasses and (2) Mossbauer study of the Metglas 2605 CO system. Metallic glasses possess unique mechanical and magnetic properties such as extremely high hardness and have novel applications in many areas including national defense. What prevents the widespread use of metallic glasses is the difficulty in achieving the glassy form due to the low glass forming ability (GFA) of most metallic alloys. The search of new BMCs requires an understanding of GFA on the atomic level and over a wide range of timescales. In this study we used nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), along with other techniques, to study both structures and atomic motions in Zr-based and Pd-based BMO systems over the entire temperature range from the liquid state down to the glassy state. We observed a clear evidence of a dynamic crossover at temperature Tc above the glass transition temperature Tg. This observation shows that below Tc atomic raffling within cages formed by neighboring atoms freezes rapidly. It demonstrates that such dynamic crossover plays a crucial role in glass transition. Comprehensive studies using NMR, x-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry revealed the details of nucleation and growth processes in such BMGs and 14.
