"An Old Fairy Tale - The Sleeping Beauty" is a 1865 poem by J. R. Planché and illustrated by The Brothers Dalziel. Based on the classic fairytale, it involves a beautiful princess, a sleeping enchantment, and a handsome prince. James Robinson Planché (1796 - 1880) was a British antiquary, dramatist, and officer of arms. Over a sixty-year period he produced, collaborated on, or adapted 176 plays over a variety of genres farce, extravaganza, comedy, burletta, opera, and melodrama. The Brothers Dalziel were a prolific firm of Victorian engravers founded by Edward Dalziel and his brother George Dalziel in 1839. Their other two brothers, John Dalziel and Thomas Dalziel also joined the firm later; all four were the sons of Alexander Dalziel of Wooler. Together, they produced a large amount of illustrations with a variety of significant Victorian artists, including Arthur Boyd Houghton, John Gilbert, John Everett Millais, and john Tenniel. Some notable works they contributed to include Edward Lear's "Book of Nonsense" (1862) and Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass". The original vision of Grimms' tales in English for the first time When Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published their Children's and Household Tales in 1812, followed by a second volume in 1815, they had no idea that such stories as "Rapunzel," "Hansel and Gretel," and "Cinderella" would become the most celebrated in the world. Yet few people today are familiar with the majority of tales from the two early volumes, since in the next four decades the Grimms would publish six other editions, each extensively revised in content and style. For the very first time, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm makes available in English all 156 stories from the 1812 and 1815 editions. These narrative gems, newly translated and brought together in one beautiful book, are accompanied by sumptuous new illustrations from award-winning artist Andrea Dezsö. From "The Frog King" to "The Golden Key," wondrous worlds unfold—heroes and heroines are rewarded, weaker animals triumph over the strong, and simple bumpkins prove themselves not so simple after all. Esteemed fairy tale scholar Jack Zipes offers accessible translations that retain the spare description and engaging storytelling style of the originals. Indeed, this is what makes the tales from the 1812 and 1815 editions unique—they reflect diverse voices, rooted in oral traditions, that are absent from the Grimms' later, more embellished collections of tales. Zipes's introduction gives important historical context, and the book includes the Grimms' prefaces and notes. A delight to read, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm presents these peerless stories to a whole new generation of readers.

Old Hungarian Fairy Tales was edited and translated from Hungarian by Baroness Orczy (creator of the famous Scarlet Pimpernel series) in 1895. Excerpt: "THERE lies before me, as I write, a quaint old book; from this little book—torn and soiled, its edges all gone—nearly all the stories in this volume are drawn. In their earliest childhood, Hungarian children hear the story of "Forget-me-Not" (Nfelejts), the history of the "Twin Hunchbacks" (A Ret Torpe), and the doings of the wicked Sultana in the "Magic Cat" (A Buvos Macska.) In my little book is the shell of these stories told simply and in few words. Who was the originator of them?"

Fairy Gold: A Book of Old English Fairy Tales was compiled by Ernest Rhys (1859 – 1946) and illustrated by Herbert Cole (1867 – 1930). Rhys was a famed writer and editor – best known for his role as founder of the ‘Everyman’s Library’, a series of affordable classics. Rhys was passionate about English folkloric tradition, and making such wonderful works of literature accessible to the common people. The book starts with a quotation from Shakespeare’s A Winter’s Tale, informing the reader that: ‘This is fairy Gold boy; and t’will prove so...’ From here on in, it is a text to amuse, delight, scare and inform – all in equal measures – for young and old alike. Fairy Gold contains a set of wonderful black and white illustrations by Herbert Cole, as well as such well-known tales as ‘The Three Bears’, ‘Tom Thumb’, ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and ‘The Mermaid’ as well as other, near-forgotten English stories such as ‘The Fairy Fair’, ‘Mr and Mrs Vinegar’, ‘The King and the Vipers’ and ‘Queen Mab’s Good Grace.’ The text appears in its original translation, ensuring that none of the work’s initial brilliance is lost. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children’s stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.
