Climatic, nutritional, and economic constraints in the tropical ecozones of Latin America severely restrict the efficiency of specialized, intensive production of milk and beef. Dual purpose (milk and beef) cattle production systems thus have become important components of the livestock sectors of many Latin American countries. Despite their significant contribution to regional supplies of milk and beef, few studies have examined resource allocation strategies for dual purpose farms. The primary objective of this study is to examine nutritional management decisions on dual purpose farms. A multi-period linear programming (LP) model of a representative dual purpose farm in western Venezuela is developed based on the survey data of holmann (1989) and othersecondary sources. The model was used to examine constraints on dual purpose production, to evaluate alternative strategies of nutritional management, to assess the impacts of limited resources, and to analyze optimal responses to price changes resulting from government policy. The LP model selects the combination of animal inventory, forage production, feed purchases, and animal sales activities to maximize discounted net margin (total revenues less variable costs). The combination of activities is selected subject to constraints on farm resources, herd composition, and the nutritional requirements of each class of animals. The LP model represents a three-year cow replacement cycle in six periods to account for seasonal variation in forage quality and ...

Biotechnology is expected, by many observers, to have a significant impact on the world dairy industry over the next decade. In this timely volume, Lovell Jarvis analyzes the potential effect of two biotechnologies—multiple ovulation and embryo transfers (MOET) and recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST—on the dairy industry around the world. According to Jarvis's research, the effects of these two technologies will vary greatly between the developed and developing nations. He predicts that the technologies will be most profitable for the developed nations, where their use will increase milk production and strengthen their positions in dairy export markets. Developing country dairy sectors will probably lose from the use of these two biotechnologies, as their own international trade position will be weakened, though their own consumers should benefit. Jarvis concludes his study with a look at alternative approaches that might improve the competitive position of developing countries in the dairy sector.

ABSTRACT: The dual-purpose cattle system (DPCS) is the traditional cattle production system in the lowland tropics of Latin America where crossbred cattle are used for the production of milk and beef. This system is based on local and low cost inputs, but has been often considered to be inefficient due to its low partial productivity indices when compared with those used in developed countries. Few data exist about the efficiency of this system but the scant literature available is based on partial productivity indices. These indices provide useful information but do not take into account the effect of total inputs on total outputs as a measure of total efficiency. This study attempts to provide standard measurement of the technical efficiency (TE) of this system based on the concept of total factor productivity. An analysis is conducted to estimate the main determinants TE of the DPCS located in Zulia State, Venezuela.
