Funny How written by Alex Clayton and has been published by SUNY Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

What makes something funny? This book shows how humor can be analyzed without killing the joke. Alex Clayton argues that the brevity of a sketch or skit and its typical rejection of narrative development make it comedy-concentrate, providing a rich field for exploring how humor works. Focusing on a dozen or so skits and scenes, Clayton shows precisely how sketch comedy appeals to the funny bone and engages our philosophical imagination. He suggests that since humor is about persuading an audience to laugh, it can be understood as a form of rhetoric. Through vivid, highly readable analyses of individual sketches, Clayton illustrates that Aristotle's three forms of appeal—logos, the appeal to reason; ethos, the appeal to communality; and pathos, the appeal to emotion—can form the basis for illuminating the inner workings of humor. Drawing on both popular and lesser-known examples from the United States, United Kingdom, and elsewhere—Monty Python's Flying Circus, Key and Peele, Saturday Night Live, Airplane!, and Smack the Pony—Clayton reveals the techniques and resonances of humor.

Mr. H. G. Wells, in his "Outline of History," was of necessity forced to omit the narration of many of the chief events in the history of these United States. Such omissions I have in this brief volume endeavored to supply. And as American history can possibly best be written by Americans and as we have among us no H. G. Wells, I have imagined an American history as written conjointly by a group of our most characteristic literary figures. Apologies are due the various authors whose style and, more particularly, whose Weltanschauung I have here attempted to reproduce; thanks are due The Bookman for permission to reprint such of these chapters as appeared in that publication. I give both freely. D. O. S.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1921 edition. Excerpt: ... chapter xi good and bad jokes The day may come when some insuppressible classificator, a kind of scholastic joculary entomologist, equipped with an eyepiece and a bottle of chloroform, will go about collecting all the different kinds of jokes and puns and whims and twits and follies, and all the nameless little light-winged forms of "smile talk" that the ingenious hand of evolution may unfold, pin them down in a great book with names derived from the all-suffering Latin, one each for the genus, species, family, order, tribe to which they severally belong, and so endow the mighty steel-ribbed shelves of the libraries of this world with a new and monumental science. It will be a science upon which those who are addicted to labor can practise their vice without fear of ever exhausting the material. For here we have already, with our distinction between simple humor and jokes with a point, and between the two currents of value, positive and negative, which constitute the point of a joke, and between poetic and practical, quantitative and qualitative humor--we have already laid ground for enough permutations and combinations to fill with their illustration many laborious volumes. And we have not even mentioned the well-known distinction between dry humor and wet, or between salt wit and sweet, or made half the trouble that might be made out of that between comic action and the humor that is conveyed in words. Undoubtedly a deep and stupendous task is here already in outline. And there remains the fact that when we are once inwardly frivolized, and rendered a little inanely hysterical, as we certainly shall be before we have finished perusing one of these vast works, we will laugh at anything at all that is mentioned--and so in the end the...

The Psychology Of Humor At Work written by Christopher Robert and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-19 with Psychology categories.

This is the first book to look at the psychological processes that enable humor to affect people and teams in the workplace. It recognizes that humor plays many roles beyond making people feel happier and more productive, and acknowledges humor’s potential darker side as well. Bringing together a small but growing field of study, the book features chapters around core psychological topics such perception, creativity and stress, while also addressing organizational issues such as leadership, teamwork, and social networks. The collection concludes with chapters on the role of humor in recruitment processes, as well as how humor consultants work with organizations. Each chapter in The Psychology of Humor at Work not only provides a comprehensive review of what is known in that area, but also considers future directions for research and practice. It will prove fascinating reading for students, practitioners and researchers in organizational psychology, HRM, and business and management.
