An Uncommon Criminal is a biography of a man who spent his life living assorted lies and who got away with way more than any dishonest person ever should. Edwin Turner Osbaldeston was a highly resourceful, quick-witted, multifaceted individual. A risk-taker, he placed himself in new situations and surroundings and fearlessly set about making a go of it. Remarkably, for a man born in 1838 into a large, working class family in England, he was able to escape the fate of many of his generation who were locked into poverty. Instead, Edwin saw much of the world, associated with leading figures of his day, and at times accumulated considerable wealth. He was charming, well mannered, physically fit, handsome, and very outgoing. He used these attributes to his great advantage over others. Overall, he excelled at getting others to believe something other than the truth.Depending on the time and place, he was known as doctor, professor, or dashing war hero. Edwin longed for legitimacy and employed medicine and good health as the means to achieve it. An early adapter, he embraced the health fads and trends of his time and profited from them. People (especially those of means) flocked to him for treatments. However, Edwin was a man beset by multiple demons. In many respects he was a product of, and lived, the "Victorian compromise"--differing public and private behaviors. He clung to titles, testimonials, and affectations, but was unable to live an honest life. Inevitably, his pretensions, criminal activities, and impulsive excesses would catch up with him. In response, he would move his action to a new locale and repeat the same pattern. Although there was an invincibility about Edwin, the law did catch up with him at times. Even then most of his misdeeds went unpunished, some by breaking jail or jumping bail. For Edwin, crime did pay more than it didn't. This is his story and the story of the people, places, and times in which he lived. He truly had an extraordinary life filled with world travel, reinvention, and an incredible amount of newspaper coverage.

“A well-supported critique of therapeutic policing and, by extension, of similar paternalistic efforts to help the poor by hassling them into good behavior.” —Los Angeles Times In his first year working in Los Angeles’s Skid Row, Forrest Stuart was stopped on the street by police fourteen times. Usually for doing little more than standing there. Juliette, a woman he met during that time, has been stopped by police well over one hundred times, arrested upward of sixty times, and has given up more than a year of her life serving week-long jail sentences. Her most common crime? Simply sitting on the sidewalk—an arrestable offense in LA. Why? What purpose did those arrests serve, for society or for Juliette? How did we reach a point where we’ve cut support for our poorest citizens, yet are spending ever more on policing and prisons? That’s the complicated, maddening story that Stuart tells in Down, Out & Under Arrest, a close-up look at the hows and whys of policing poverty in the contemporary United States. What emerges from Stuart’s years of fieldwork—not only with Skid Row residents, but with the police charged with managing them—is a tragedy built on mistakes and misplaced priorities more than on heroes and villains. At a time when distrust between police and the residents of disadvantaged neighborhoods has never been higher, Stuart’s book helps us see where we’ve gone wrong, and what steps we could take to begin to change the lives of our poorest citizens—and ultimately our society itself—for the better.

M. R. James was born in Kent, England in 1862. James came to writing fiction relatively late, not publishing his first collection of short stories - Ghost Stories of an Antiquary (1904) - until the age of 42. Modern scholars now see James as having redefined the ghost story for the 20th century and he is seen as the founder of the 'antiquarian ghost story'. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions with a brand new introductory biography of the author.

Most honourable Procurator Stiffeniis, You talents have been brought to Our attention by a gentleman of eminence, who believes that you alone are capable of resolving a situation which holds Our beloved Königsberg in a grip of terror. All Our faith and consideration are due to the notable personage who suggested your name, and that same faith and consideration now resides in you. We have no reason to doubt that you will accept this Royal Commission, and act accordingly with all haste. The fate of the city lies in your hands. --King Frederick Wilhelm III It has been years since Immanuel Kant's landmark philosophical work, Critique of Pure Reason, brought him fame throughout Europe and made him Königsberg's best-known citizen. Now, rumors have begun to surface of a new work by this aging but still acute mind. Yet unlike his earlier work, this book will not examine the mind of the average man, but the mind of the serial killer. Hanno Stiffeniis, a young magistrate, has been called to Königsberg to assist in the investigation of an enigmatic string of murders. Is it part of a plot formed by Napoleon's spies to undermine the Prussian king or the work of a solitary, unknown killer? The case would seem unsolvable, were it not for the assistance and unmatched intellect of his mentor, Immanuel Kant. Together Stiffeniis and the elderly, eccentric philosopher must track down the killer who has the city of Königsberg by the throat. Hugely atmospheric, entertaining, and intelligent, Critique of Criminal Reason marks the outstanding debut of a new name in historical fiction.
