Beginning with the birth of Jesus and tracing the religion established by his followers up to the present day, The Faith is a comprehensive exploration of the history of Christianity. Judiciously covering all the signal moments without bogging down in minutia, author Brian Moynahan's superbly written and generously illustrated book is of central importance to Christians, historians, and anyone interested in a faith that shaped the modern world. Moynahan's research uses little-known sources to tell a magnificent story encompassing everything from the early tremulous years after Jesus' death to the horrors of persecution by Nero, from the growth of monasteries to the bloody Crusades, from the building of the great cathedrals to the cataclysm of the Reformation and the Catholic Counter-Reformation, from the flight of pilgrims from Europe in pursuit of religious freedom to the Salem Witch Trials, from the advent of a traveling pope to the rise of televangelists. Coming just in time for Jubilee 2000, this ambitious book reveals and commemorates the significance of the Christian faith.

Conventional wisdom holds that tradition and history meant little to nineteenth-century American Protestants, who relied on common sense and "the Bible alone." The Old Faith in a New Nation challenges this portrayal by recovering evangelical engagement with the Christian past. Even when they appeared to be most scornful toward tradition, most optimistic and forward-looking, and most confident in their grasp of the Bible, evangelicals found themselves returning, time and again, to Christian history. They studied religious historiography, reinterpreted the history of the church, and argued over its implications for the present. Between the Revolution and the Civil War, American Protestants were deeply interested in the meaning of the Christian past. Paul J. Gutacker draws from hundreds of print sources-sermons, books, speeches, legal arguments, political petitions, and more-to show how ordinary educated Americans remembered and used Christian history. While claiming to rely on the Bible alone, antebellum Protestants frequently turned to the Christian past on questions of import: how should the government relate to religion? Could Catholic immigrants become true Americans? What opportunities and rights should be available to women? To African Americans? Protestants across denominations answered these questions not only with the Bible but also with history. By recovering the ways in which American evangelicals remembered and used Christian history, The Old Faith in a New Nation shows how religious memory shaped the nation and interrogates the meaning of "biblicism."

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 A belief is a lever that, once pulled, moves almost everything else in a person’s life. Your beliefs define your vision of the world, your behavior, and your emotional responses to other people. #2 The problem is that many of our most cherished beliefs about the world are leading us to kill one another. We cannot tolerate the possibility that certain ideas might lead to eternal happiness, because that would be intolerant of other faiths. #3 We have been slow to recognize the positive effects of religious faith. Many of us still believe that faith is an essential component of human life, and that there are good things that people get from religious faith that cannot be had elsewhere. #4 Many religious moderates have taken the high road of pluralism, asserting the equal validity of all faiths, but they forget that each faith’s beliefs are inherently irredeemably sectarian.

Hugh of St. Victor (1096-1141) was a renowned medieval philosopher, theologian, and mystical writer. Because of his great familiarity with the works of St. Augustine, he is sometimes called "the Second Augustine." His work On the Sacraments of the Christian Faith (De Sacramentis Christianae Fidei), composed about 1134, is his masterpiece as well as his most extensive work. It is a veritable Summa, a dogmatic synthesis unrivaled in Hugh's time. By "sacrament," Hugh means not only grace-giving ceremonial signs and actions but also all "mysteries" of the Scriptures, the natural world, and the Church by which God elevates humankind into His life. Hugh's theology draws on Augustine, Gregory the Great, Anselm, and Abelard; and Hugh was also in contact with Bernard of Clairvaux. In the De Sacramentis, Hugh separates all of history into the "work of creation" and the "work of restoration." The work of Creation is the triune God's creative activity, the natures of created things, and the original state and destiny of humanity. Divine Wisdom is the archetypal form of creation. The creation of the world in six days is a "sacrament," that is, a spiritually-illuminating mystery for man to contemplate. God's forming order from chaos to make the world is an instruction that guides humans to rise in love from their own chaotic ignorance to become creatures of Wisdom and therefore beauty. This kind of mystical-ethical interpretation is typical for Hugh. The work of Restoration includes the Incarnation of God the Son "with all its sacraments." Here the word "sacrament" refers to the means of salvation that flow from the Incarnation itself, including what are now called the traditional "seven sacraments." Hugh reflects on the mystery of God's freedom--why the Son came into the world even though this was not strictly necessary. Over all, Hugh's work is both an exegetical treatise and a work of spiritual instruction--an example of the inseparability of doctrinal reflection and spiritual growth as understood by this great twelfth-century theologian.

The Religion Of Technology written by David F. Noble and has been published by Knopf this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-23 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Arguing against the widely held belief that technology and religion are at war with each other, David F. Noble's groundbreaking book reveals the religious roots and spirit of Western technology. It links the technological enthusiasms of the present day with the ancient and enduring Christian expectation of recovering humankind's lost divinity. Covering a period of a thousand years, Noble traces the evolution of the Western idea of technological development from the ninth century, when the useful arts became connected to the concept of redemption, up to the twentieth, when humans began to exercise God-like knowledge and powers. Noble describes how technological advance accelerated at the very point when it was invested with spiritual significance. By examining the imaginings of monks, explorers, magi, scientists, Freemasons, and engineers, this historical account brings to light an other-worldly inspiration behind the apparently worldly endeavors by which we habitually define Western civilization. Thus we see that Isaac Newton devoted his lifetime to the interpretation of prophecy. Joseph Priestley was the discoverer of oxygen and a founder of Unitarianism. Freemasons were early advocates of industrialization and the fathers of the engineering profession. Wernher von Braun saw spaceflight as a millenarian new beginning for humankind. The narrative moves into our own time through the technological enterprises of the last half of the twentieth century: nuclear weapons, manned space exploration, Artificial Intelligence, and genetic engineering. Here the book suggests that the convergence of technology and religion has outlived its usefulness, that though it once contributed to human well-being, it has now become a threat to our survival. Viewed at the dawn of the new millennium, the technological means upon which we have come to rely for the preservation and enlargement of our lives betray an increasing impatience with life and a disdainful disregard for mortal needs. David F. Noble thus contends that we must collectively strive to disabuse ourselves of the inherited religion of technology and begin rigorously to re-examine our enchantment with unregulated technological advance.
