Wacana merupakan salah satu kajian dalam ilmu linguistik yang ditetapkan dalam satu kajian tersendiri, yakni analisis wacana. Kajian analisis wacana dapat dilihat dari paradigma struktural dan paradigma fungsional, serta struktural fungsional. Dalam paradigma struktural, wacana dipandang sebagai satuan bahasa terlengkap dalam hierarki gramatikal tertinggi atau terbesar. Sementara dalam paradigma fungsional wacana dimaknai sebagai bentuk interaksi. Dalam interaksi tersebut tentu ada pesan yang harus dimaknai. Dalam memaknai pesan tersebut, paradigma fungsional melibatkan berbagai aspek dalam kajiannya, seperti sosial, politik, hukum, budaya, dan sebagainya. Buku ini memaparkan wacana dari sisi konsep, teori, dan aplikasinya. Konsep-konsep terpapar pada subbab-subbab yang menjelaskan tentang hakikat, tujuan, fungsi, struktur, unsur-unsur, kohesi dan koherensi, serta jenis-jenis wacana.
