Advances in audio data compression are largely driven by the need to conserve transmission rate or bandwidth, while maintaining the ability to accurately reconstruct the signal at the receiver. This report examines data compression methods with an emphasis on techniques for the compression of audio data. An overview of data compression schemes is presented to provide the background for a performance comparison between selected versions of data compression systems featuring adaptive differential pulse code modulation (ADPCM) schemes. Two different types of data compression systems are investigated; IIR and FIR impulse implementations. A modification to the basic ADPCM system using a modular function is implemented. The modular operation results in a smaller size codebook and prevents data expansion when the source is not matched to the code. This modification is utilized for both types of ADPCM coders compared. To complete the compression system Huffman coding, is employed to encode and decode the compressed data to and from binary form.

Optimum (Minimum-MSE) quantizers for speech and TV are developed. Difference-PCM (DIFPCM) is presented as an efficient scheme for digital encoding of speech and TV. This DIFPCM is analyzed theoretically, tested with real speech and its performance is compared with that of PCM and DPCM with optimum and logarithmic quantizing characteristics. The performance criteria used in this study are S/N and Dynamic Range. The performance of DIFPCM is found to lie midway between that of PCM and DPCM. (Author).

A delay adaptive differential pulse code modulation system, consisting of a delay adaptive predictor and a delay adaptive quantizer, is investigated. These components are first analyzed separately, and then in combination, using a stationary Gaussian Markov signal. They employ a buffer to store a segment of the signal at a time. Parameters are computed from each segment, and then used to encode this segment. It is shown that the delay adaptive can achieve a significantly lower mean square prediction error than the analogous nonadaptive predictor. A technique of delay adaptive quantization, in which the levels of a core quantizer are scaled in proportion to the local r.m.s. value of the signal, is described and analyzed. The signal-to-quantizing noise ratio of the delay adaptive differential pulse code modulation system is obtained. For small learning periods, this SNR is very close to a general upper bound for digital encoding systems. Finally, the transmission of the adaptive parameters to the receiver is considered. The parameters must be quantized; uniform quantizers are employed. The SNR is obtained as a function of total channel bit rate and compared to a bound for nonadaptive DPCM. The system performs quite well for learning periods larger than about fourteen samples. (Author).

Pulse Code Modulation Techniques brings together the theory and practice of PCM at the physical layer, where the "bits meet the silicon", so to speak. The key topics of symbol encoding, detection and synchronization are discussed, in detail, both from a theoretical and a practical standpoint. Topics which have been largely absent in text books, such as multiplexing, formatting and format synchronization, are also considered. Although PCM evolved as a communication technology, it has become an important technology in data recording. In a sense, magnetic or optical media are just specialized communication media and the key technologies discussed in this book are just as important to recording applications as to communications. PCM codes used for magnetic recording applications are discussed along with traditional communication codes. The design, analysis and implementation of a PCM system requires knowledge of very specific techniques associated with detection, synchronization and coding. The techniques have evolved from both ad hoc methods and complex theory. One of the goals of this book is to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the key techniques. Matched filters are not only discussed theoretically, but means for implementing them are also considered. The same is true with symbol synchronization.

The primary contribution of this dissertation is to introduce a new hybrid adaptive predictive coding technique for data compression. The conventional adaptive predictive coding techniques are based on autoregressive models that are known to perfrom poorly in the presence of high frequency signal components. The hybrid technique proposed here overcomes this shortcoming by incorporating two levels of prediction. The first level uses a frequency domain approach to estimate and remove the predictable high frequency coding of the smoothed signal. The performance of the proposed hybrid adaptive predictive coding scheme is first tested on one-dimensional signals and compared with a conventional differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) scheme. Next, this new technique is applied to compression of gray scale images by using two-dimensional multiplicative autoregressive models and the results are compared to a conventional DPCM technique. For one-dimensional signals, the new hybrid adaptive predictive coding scheme showed promising results when applied to lossless, lossy and near-lossless data compression. For two-dimensional gray scale images, although improvement in lossless compression was evident, the results for loss and near-lossless compression were somewhat mixed.
