3D face reconstruction and facial expression analytics using 3D facial data are new and hot research topics in computer graphics and computer vision. In this proposal, we first review the background knowledge for emotion analytics using 3D morphable face model, including geometry feature-based methods, statistic model-based methods and more advanced deep learning-bade methods. Then, we introduce a novel 3D face modeling and reconstruction solution that robustly and accurately acquires 3D face models from a couple of images captured by a single smartphone camera. Two selfie photos of a subject taken from the front and side are used to guide our Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) induced part-based face model to iteratively reconstruct an initial 3D face of the subject. Then, an iterative detail updating method is applied to the initial generated 3D face to reconstruct facial details through optimizing lighting parameters and local depths. Our iterative 3D face reconstruction method permits fully automatic registration of a part-based face representation to the acquired face data and the detailed 2D/3D features to build a high-quality 3D face model. The NMF part-based face representation learned from a 3D face database facilitates effective global and adaptive local detail data fitting alternatively. Our system is flexible and it allows users to conduct the capture in any uncontrolled environment. We demonstrate the capability of our method by allowing users to capture and reconstruct their 3D faces by themselves. Based on the 3D face model reconstruction, we can analyze the facial expression and the related emotion in 3D space. We present a novel approach to analyze the facial expressions from images and a quantitative information visualization scheme for exploring this type of visual data.

3D Face Modeling, Analysis and Recognition presents methodologies for analyzing shapes of facial surfaces, develops computational tools for analyzing 3D face data, and illustrates them using state-of-the-art applications. The methodologies chosen are based on efficient representations, metrics, comparisons, and classifications of features that are especially relevant in the context of 3D measurements of human faces. These frameworks have a long-term utility in face analysis, taking into account the anticipated improvements in data collection, data storage, processing speeds, and application scenarios expected as the discipline develops further. The book covers face acquisition through 3D scanners and 3D face pre-processing, before examining the three main approaches for 3D facial surface analysis and recognition: facial curves; facial surface features; and 3D morphable models. Whilst the focus of these chapters is fundamentals and methodologies, the algorithms provided are tested on facial biometric data, thereby continually showing how the methods can be applied. Key features: • Explores the underlying mathematics and will apply these mathematical techniques to 3D face analysis and recognition • Provides coverage of a wide range of applications including biometrics, forensic applications, facial expression analysis, and model fitting to 2D images • Contains numerous exercises and algorithms throughout the book

3D Face Processing: Modeling, Analysis and Synthesis introduces the frontiers of 3D face processing techniques. It reviews existing 3D face processing techniques, including techniques for 3D face geometry modeling; 3D face motion modeling; and 3D face motion tracking and animation. Then it discusses a unified framework for face modeling, analysis and synthesis. In this framework, the authors present new methods for modeling complex natural facial motion, as well as face appearance variations due to illumination and subtle motion. Then the authors apply the framework to face tracking, expression recognition and face avatar for HCI interface. They conclude this book with comments on future work in the 3D face processing framework. 3D Face Processing: Modeling, Analysis and Synthesis will interest those working in face processing for intelligent human computer interaction and video surveillance. It contains a comprehensive survey on existing face processing techniques, which can serve as a reference for students and researchers. It also covers in-depth discussion on face motion analysis and synthesis algorithms, which will benefit more advanced graduate students and researchers.

Abstract: Synthesis of realistic human faces is still one of the biggest challenges in computer graphics. Similarly, analysis of human faces in images has been a traditional topic of research in computer vision. Both research areas related to human faces have many practical applications including face modeling, face tracking, face relighting, and face recognition in diverse industry fields such as games, virtual reality, digital photography, biometrics and security. In this dissertation we explore the problem of model-based 3D face synthesis and analysis using various kind of image ensembles including multi-view image silhouettes, sequential video frames, and single photographs. We design and develop various image-model difference metrics that can be used in an optimization framework to recover the optimal model parameters of our 3D face model from the input images. In the first part of this dissertation we present a novel method for 3D face reconstruction from a set or sequence of 2D binary silhouettes. Experiments with a multi-camera rig as well as monocular video sequences demonstrate the advantages of our 3D modeling framework. In order to determine the set of optimal views required for silhouette-based shape reconstruction, we build on our modeling framework and extend it by aggressive pruning of the view-sphere with view clustering and various imaging constraints. In the second part of this dissertation we present a novel framework that acquires the 3D shape, texture, pose and illumination of a face from a single photograph. Using a custom-built face scanning system which is equipped with 16 digital cameras and 146 directional LED light sources, a large-scale dataset was collected, which consists of 3D face scans and light reflection images of a diverse group of human subjects. From this dataset, we derive a novel measurement-based illumination model that implicitly incorporates cast-shadows and specularities. We also propose a novel fitting framework that estimates the parameters of the morphable model by minimizing the distance of the input image to the dynamically changing illumination subspace. We leverage our modeling and fitting methods to solve two challenging problems in computer graphics and computer vision - face relighting and face recognition.

Project Report from the year 2012 in the subject Engineering - Computer Engineering, Gujarat University, course: Electronics and communication, language: English, abstract: This thesis describes a face recognition system that overcomes the problem of changes in gesture and mimics in three-dimensional (3D) range images. Here, we propose a local variation detection and restoration method based on the two-dimensional (2D) principal component analysis (PCA). The depth map of a 3D facial image is first smoothed using median filter to minimize the local variation. The detected face shape is cropped & normalized to a standard image size of 101x101 pixels and the forefront nose point is selected to be the image center. Facial depthvalues are scaled between 0 and 255 for translation and scaling-invariant identification. The preprocessed face image is smoothed to minimize the local variations. The 2DPCA is applied to the resultant range data and the corresponding principal-(or eigen-) images are used as the characteristic feature vectors of the subject to find his/her identity in the database of pre-recorded faces. The system's performance is tested against the GavabDB facial databases. Experimental results show that the proposed method is able to identify subjects with different gesture and mimics in the presence of noise in their 3D facial image.
