In this report prepared by the Historical Evaluation and Research Organization (HERO) for the US Army Concepts Analysis Agency, HERO has compiled data on 600 major battles of modern history from the beginning of the 17th Century through the first three quarters of the 20th Century, and presented this data in a combination of matrices and narratives. The matrices comprise seven tables which present all of the significant statistical data available on the battles and show how major factors of combat have influenced the outcomes of these battles. There is a concise narrative for each battle, which summarizes the principal sources consulted in the research for that battle.

A comprehensive analysis in six volumes of the factors that have significantly influenced the outcomes of 600 major battles of modern history, commencing with the Netherlands' War of Independence and the Thirty Years' War, and continuing through the 1973 Arab-Israeli War. Volume I includes the summary and introductory materials. Volumes II-VI present matrices and narrative summaries for the engagements, which are grouped chronologically by wars and campaigns within wars. The matrices summarize all important elements of data and qualitative information concerning each engagement, plus a historical assessment of the factors that were important to the course of the engagement and its outcome. Following each group of matrices are narrative summaries of engagements listed in the matrices. These narrative summaries succintly describe the background, course, and outcome of each engagement, include a brief assessment of its significance, and list the sources consulted with respect to the presentation for each. Appended to each volume are bibliographies listing the major sources consulted during the research for each.

In virtually every case, the LFW Team's findings differ substantially from those determined by the authors of CAA-SR-84-6. This final report contains enhanced data and corrections of omissions, inconsistencies, and ambiguities for a 1984 study performed by HERO for USACAA entitled ANALYSIS OF FACTORS THAT HAVE INFLUENCED OUTCOMES OF BATTLES AND WARS: A DATA BASE OF BATTLES AND ENGAGEMENTS (Contract No. MDA903-82C-0363). It has been performed in order to make the data base contained in the 1984 study applicable for use in U.S. Army studies and analyses, concept formulations, and wargaming. It contains enhanced and corrected data from the original data base, newly developed data, and responses to specific questions and problems formulated by USACAA in its transcription of the data base to computerized format. This contains introductory materials, Volumes II-V, the main body of the report, contain the results of nine tasks developed by USACAA.

Since the inclusion of 'non-bloody' losses (i.e., prisoners of war and missing in action) in the HERO database's loss figures might contribute to these anomalies, LFW was asked to provide estimates of the numbers actually killed or wounded in action, wherever the available information was judged sufficient to make reasonably reliable estimates of those bloody losses. For the battles on the Eastern Front, only a few official German records were applicable, but the LFW Team developed a completely new set of secondary sources considered to be far more reliable than those cited in the HERO study.
