The concept of skewed sampling is developed and a single-rate, closed-loop state variable model for realistic aircraft control loops is developed. Using this model, a covariance analysis of the channel differences is given. This statistical treatment is based on filtered white noise external inputs, but it is shown how such inputs can be used to generate signals which approximate the true system external inputs. The model and the analysis are general and applicable to a variety of systems. A user-oriented software package, using FORTRAN, is developed to facilitate the required computations and to allow parametric studies of the effect on inherent errors of control system gains, time constants, sample time and other parameters. The analysis is applied to several examples, including time and other parameters. This report describes research on redundancy management in digital flight control systems. The emphasis is on the properties, techniques, and requirements associated with the operations of monitoring and voting and their effects on the closed loop system operation when asynchronous sampling is used. Part I is concerned primarily with the monitoring operation for quadredundant input signals. Part II presents three extensions to a previously reported model for closed loop flight control systems that have dual-redundant, asynchronous digital controllers.

A method of formulating a state-space model for the analysis of redundant-channel digital flight control systems (DFCS) is described. This mathematical representation is used to determine the effects of asynchronous digital processor operations on a system such as the DFCS for the Digital Avionics Information System (DAIS) which employs comparison monitoring and voting techniques. The report briefly discussed the evolution of digital flight control systems and the motivation for DFCS comparison monitoring. A procedure is presented for performing a covariance analysis to determine the steady-state values of inherent errors.
