The Government's initiative Quality in Town and Country was launched on 13 July 1994 by John Gummer, Secretary of State for the Department of the Environment, with the publication of a discussion document. The aim of the document was threefold: to raise the awareness of the importance of good design and quality of buildings in the environment; to encourage debate and stimulate ideas about how to achieve quality in future; and to challenge others to see what they were prepared to do to achieve quality. Responses to the discussion document were invited and over 1100 were received. This report brings together the findings to provide: an overview of the techniques used to analyze the responses to the discussion document; an overview of the key findings; and a further discussion of the key findings and recommendations for future action.

This book directly addresses the major planning debate of our time - the delivery and quality of new housing development. As pressure for new housing development in England increases, a widespread desire to improve the design of the resulting residential environments becomes evermore apparent with increasing condemnation of the standard products of the volume housebuilders. In recent years central government has come to accept the need to deliver higher quality living environments, and the important role of the planning system in helping to raise design standards. Housing Design Quality focuses on this role and in particular on how the various policy instruments available to public authorities can be used in a positive manner to deliver higher quality residential developments.

Urban Transformations written by Ian Bentley and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-08-02 with Architecture categories.

Cities affect every person's life, yet across the traditional divides of class, age, gender and political affiliation, armies of people are united in their dislike of the transformations that cities have undergone in recent times. The physical form of the urban environment is not a designer add-on to 'real' social issues; it is a central aspect of the social world. Yet in many people's experience, the cumulative impacts of recent urban development have created widely un-loved urban places. To work towards better-loved urban environments, we need to understand how current problems have arisen and identify practical action to address them. Urban Transformations examines the crucial issues relating to how cities are formed, how people use these urban environments and how cities can be transformed into better places. Exploring the links between the concrete physicality of the built environment and the complex social, economic, political and cultural processes through which the physical urban form is produced and consumed, Ian Bentley proposes a framework of ideas to provoke and develop current debate and new forms of practice.

Perspectives On British Rural Planning Policy 1994 97 written by Andrew W. Gilg and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-24 with Science categories.

First published in 1999, this volume explores the issue of rural planning, which has become a complex activity in which policies in one area have important ramifications in other policy areas. It is thus very important for all those involved in rural planning affairs to remain not only up to date, but to place recent developments in a longer perspective. This new series aims to answer all these needs by providing an accurate and informed account of recent developments in North American, British and European rural policy, and critiques of policy implementation and its impacts from new material and from analyses of published research findings. This second volume in the series covers the last few years of the John Major administration until the election of the Tony Blair government in May 1997. It is divided into six chapters: overview of changes affecting all rural planning activities; the environment; town and country planning; extensive land uses; nature conservation and recreation; and social land economic issues. The next British volume will cover the entire period of the current government, with successive volumes covering each new government as it unfolds.
