Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, Technical University of Chemnitz, course: Hauptseminar: 19th-Century Horror: Frankenstein, Dracula, Jekyll & Hyde, language: English, abstract: Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886) is regarded as one of the most famous of all stories relating to doubles. The term Doppelgänger, coined by Jean-Paul Richter in 1796, was hallowed by the Romantic Movement and became particularly popular in the 19th century caused by social upheavals and the consequences of the industrial revolution (cf. Fernandez Bravo 1992:343, 366). Beside the Doppelgänger motif, Stevenson’s writing reflects to a great degree the circumstances of the Victorian age. On the one hand, the 1880s were the time of the development of sciences and psychology. On the other hand, the life was influenced by the established religion raising morality to the highest norm and demanding repression of desires and sexuality. Resulting from this, “a split within the self” was realized not only by authors but by the whole society (op. cit.:365). Consequently, the “Freudian concept of the split personality appeared in literature before the actual theory itself was proposed” (ibid.). Doppelgänger as well as split personalities became a common motif and were “used to explore issues of identity, sexuality and morality” (Bell 1992:176). According to Stevenson’s wife, one of the most important influences was “another strange case of ‘multiple personality’” by which Stevenson was “deeply impressed” (Showalter 2000:190). While he was writing Jekyll and Hyde, the author read in the Archives de Neurologie, a French journal on sub-consciousness, the case of Louis V., who was a male hysteric that “underwent a startling metamorphosis” beginning in his adolescence (ibid., cf. ibid.). All these facts in addition to Stevenson’s „passionate aim ‘to find a body, a vehicle for that strong sense of man’s double being’ which he had felt as a student in Edinburgh when he dreamed of leading ‘a double life – one of the day, one of the night’“ may have been his inspirations which culminated in the writing of the novel (Stevenson quoted in op. cit.:191).

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,3, Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald (Anglistik/Amerikanistik), course: Psychological Approaches to British Fiction, language: English, abstract: Since the early beginning of literature the double motif has served in its different models to trace the features of the ego, individuality and perception. The double plays an important role in literature: it portays confusion and transformation, reflects inner desires and spreads anxiety. But the phenomenon is not just an invention of literature. Again and again people claim to see oneself like some famous persons such as Catharine the Great and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. This term paper will analyze the Double-motif in Robert Louis Stevenson's novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with regard to psychoanalysis. While citing secondary literature it became obvious that a good portion of these examinations use psychological criteria which offer a wider range of insight into the oddly logic of Stevenson's text which he to no purpose named The Strange Case. Three texts from Freud lend themselves to work with the novel: "Die 'kulturelle' Sexualmoral und die moderne Nervosität" (1908), "Das Unheimliche" (1919) and "Das Unbehagen in der Kultur" (1930). In "Das Unheimliche" Freud deals with the background of the double motif. He interprets the phenomenon from its probable beginning in mythology till the masterly usage of it in E.T.A Hoffmann's "Sandman". In section two of this term paper I will give an overview of the double motif in literature. For this, I will explain the development of the term and its psychological implications. The third section will constitute the main part of the paper: I will first discuss two moments which can be interpreted with the help of psychology and then I will try to apply Freud's theorems to the primary source which is full of repressed drives and desires.

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Other, grade: 1,0, University of Koblenz-Landau, language: English, abstract: Table of Contents 1)Introduction 2)Dr. Jekyll vs. Mr. Hyde 3)Dr. Jekyll ́s motivation 4)Analysis of the relationship between Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde 5)Conclusion Bibliography 1) Introduction (Extract) In the 19th century published cases of both dual and multiple personalities were accumulated, for instance that of Mary Reynolds, who could have been a model for Robert Louis Stevenson ́s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In parallel to these publications a new interest in supernaturalism, excitement and drama developed. Gothicism as well as duality are themes which Stevenson had long been trying to write about and emerge in lots of his other writings, such as Olalla, The Body Snatcher and The Dynamiter. But the psychic conflict of doubles found its most “explicit treatment” in The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886), which also “endures as a landmark in the evolution of psychological fiction”. Even the names of ́Jekyll ́ and his alternating personality ́Hyde ́ have become a kind of allegory for “any homicidal wolf in sheep ́s clothing”, not only for those who have read their story but also for those who have not. ...

Essay from the year 2022 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 85, , language: English, abstract: This work is about dualism in the novel "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" by Robert Stevenson. This research aims to analyze the multiple personality disorder that can be found in the novel entitled "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde" by Robert Stevenson. There are three aims of this study. First, how multiple personality disorders are caused in the main character. Second, understand how the main character dealt with multiple personality disorders? The third one is, to figure out the effects of the disorder in the character’s life? The data were described and analyzed through the use of Freud's psychoanalytic theory, where the research aims to discover the two different personalities that the protagonist suffers from. The protagonist can be Dr. Jekyll, the friendly and intelligent person, or Mr. Hyde, the evil and criminal. Multiple personality disorder has bad effects on the main character. The idea of dual human nature does not stand alone between the men, even if they do not accept it. The relationship between Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is now dismissed by Dr. Jekyll because it does not match what the intelligent scientist believes. The immoral acts are all from Mr. Hyde, while Dr. Jekyll doesn't know what Mr. Hyde is doing because when this character appears, he becomes unconscious. In the end, the multiple personality disorder brought him to death. As stated in the novel, he commits suicide to end his suffering and stops Mr. Hyde. Effects confirm that multiple personality disorders caused a messy life psychologically and physically.

First published in 1886 as a “shilling shocker,” Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde takes the basic struggle between good and evil and adds to the mix bourgeois respectability, urban violence, and class conflict. The result is a tale that has taken on the force of myth in the popular imagination. This Broadview edition provides a fascinating selection of contextual material, including contemporary reviews of the novel, Stevenson’s essay “A Chapter on Dreams,” and excerpts from the 1887 stage version of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Also included are historical documents on criminality and degeneracy, the “Jack the Ripper” murders, the “double brain,” and London in the 1880s. New to this third edition are an appendix on the figure of the Victorian gentleman and an expanded selection of letters related to the novel; the introduction and bibliography have also been updated to reflect recent criticism.
