Harish-Chandra was a mathematician of great power, vision, and remarkable ingenuity. His profound contributions to the representation theory of Lie groups, harmonic analysis, and related areas left researchers a rich legacy that continues today. This book presents the proceedings of an AMS Special Session entitled, "Representation Theory and Noncommutative Harmonic Analysis: A Special Session Honoring the Memory of Harish-Chandra", which marked 75 years since his birth and 15 years since his untimely death at age 60. Contributions to the volume were written by an outstanding group of internationally known mathematicians. Included are expository and historical surveys and original research papers. The book also includes talks given at the IAS Memorial Service in 1983 by colleagues who knew Harish-Chandra well. Analysis on Symmetric spaces, or more generally, on homogeneous spaces of semisimple Lie groups, is a subject that has undergone a vigorous development in recent years, and has become a central part of contemporary mathematics. This is only to be expected, since homogeneous spaces and group representations arise naturally in diverse contexts ranging from Number theory and Geometry to Particle Physics and Polymer Chemistry. Its explosive growth sometimes makes it difficult to realize that it is actually relatively young as mathematical theories go. The early ideas in the subject (as is the case with many others) go back to Elie Cart an and Hermann Weyl who studied the compact symmetric spaces in the 1930's. However its full development did not begin until the 1950's when Gel'fand and Harish Chandra dared to dream of a theory of representations that included all semisimple Lie groups. Harish-Chandra's theory of spherical functions was essentially complete in the late 1950's, and was to prove to be the forerunner of his monumental work on harmonic analysis on reductive groups that has inspired a whole generation of mathematicians. It is the harmonic analysis of spherical functions on symmetric spaces, that is at the focus of this book. The fundamental questions of harmonic analysis on symmetric spaces involve an interplay of the geometric, analytical, and algebraic aspects of these spaces. They have therefore attracted a great deal of attention, and there have been many excellent expositions of the themes that are characteristic of this subject.

This book introduces a systematic new approach to the construction and analysis of semisimple $p$-adic groups. The basic construction presented here provides an analogue in certain cases of the Harish-Chandra homomorphism, which has played an essential role in the theory of semisimple Lie groups. The book begins with an overview of the representation theory of GL$_n$ over finite groups. The author then explicitly establishes isomorphisms between certain convolution algebras of functions on two different groups. Because of the form of the isomorphisms, basic properties of representations are preserved, thus giving a concrete example to the correspondences predicted by the general philosphy of Langlands. The first chapter, suitable as an introduction for graduate students, requires only a basic knowledge of representation theory of finite groups and some familiarity with the general linear group and the symmetric group. The later chapters introduce researchers in the field to a new method for the explicit construction and analysis of representations of $p$-adic groups, a powerful method clearly capable of extensive further development.

This volume, the second of Helgason's impressive three books on Lie groups and the geometry and analysis of symmetric spaces, is an introduction to group-theoretic methods in analysis on spaces with a group action. The first chapter deals with the three two-dimensional spaces of constant curvature, requiring only elementary methods and no Lie theory. It is remarkably accessible and would be suitable for a first-year graduate course. The remainder of the book covers more advanced topics, including the work of Harish-Chandra and others, but especially that of Helgason himself. Indeed, the exposition can be seen as an account of the author's tremendous contributions to the subject.Chapter I deals with modern integral geometry and Radon transforms. The second chapter examines the interconnection between Lie groups and differential operators. Chapter IV develops the theory of spherical functions on semisimple Lie groups with a certain degree of completeness, including a study of Harish-Chandra's $c$-function. The treatment of analysis on compact symmetric spaces (Chapter V) includes some finite-dimensional representation theory for compact Lie groups and Fourier analysis on compact groups. Each chapter ends with exercises (with solutions given at the end of the book!) and historical notes.This book, which is new to the AMS publishing program, is an excellent example of the author's well-known clear and careful writing style. It has become the standard text for the study of spherical functions and invariant differential operators on symmetric spaces.
