[Italiano]: In un momento così significativo per la storia europea e mondiale, questo volume vuole essere la raccolta di riflessioni scientifiche condotte sui rapporti tra le scelte politiche, le azioni militari e la fisionomia delle città e del paesaggio urbano, sull’evoluzione delle strutture e delle tecniche di difesa, sulla rappresentazione della guerra e dei suoi effetti sull’immagine urbana, sul recupero delle tracce della memoria cittadina. Da una parte il campo delle Digital Humanities apre nuove prospettive per studiare l'immagine della città prima, durante e dopo la guerra, dall’altro le tecnologie digitali impegnano studiosi e ricercatori di varie discipline: in particolare nell’ambito del disegno viene esplorato il ruolo della rappresentazione nella formulazione dei progetti urbani di difesa e nella documentazione degli eventi bellici e delle tracce lasciate dai conflitti, mentre nell’ambito del restauro vengono approfondite le sfide teoriche e pratiche imposte dai danni arrecati dai conflitti ai centri storici, passando in rassegna casi studio, soluzioni e dibattiti relativi alla conservazione del patrimonio urbano coinvolto in azioni di guerra, con un'attenzione particolare all'identità e alla memoria collettiva./[English]: At such a significant moment in European and world history, this volume aims to be a collection of scientific reflections about the relationships between political choices, military actions and the physiognomy of cities and the urban landscape, about the evolution of defence structures and techniques, about the representation of war and its effects on the urban image, and about the recovery of the traces of city memory. On the one hand the field of Digital Humanities opens up new perspectives to study the image of the city before, during and after the war, on the other hand digital technologies engage academics and researchers from various disciplines: In particular, in the area of drawing, the role of representation in the formulation of urban defence projects and in the documentation of wartime events and the traces left behind by conflicts is explored, while in the area of conservation, the theoretical and practical challenges imposed by the damage caused by conflicts to historic centres are explored, reviewing case studies, solutions and debates relating to the conservation of urban heritage involved in wartime actions, with a focus on identity and collective memory.

An environment, or any building product or service in it, should ideally be designed to meet the needs of all those who wish to use it. Universal Design is the design and composition of environments, products, and services so that they can be accessed, understood and used to the greatest extent possible by all people, regardless of their age, size, ability or disability. It creates products, services and environments that meet people’s needs. In short, Universal Design is good design. This book presents the proceedings of UD2022, the 6th International Conference on Universal Design, held from 7 - 9 September 2022 in Brescia, Italy. The conference is targeted at professionals and academics interested in the theme of universal design as related to the built environment and the wellbeing of users, but also covers mobility and urban environments, knowledge, and information transfer, bringing together research knowledge and best practice from all over the world. Giovanni Klaus Koenig (1924-1989) è stato architetto, designer di mezzi di trasporto su rotaia, docente universitario, appassionato studioso di treni e di tram, critico dell’architettura contemporanea, storico dell’industrial design, intellettuale impegnato nella soluzione dei problemi della sua città, Firenze. Il paesaggio urbano rappresenta il prodotto artificiale di ogni cultura che definisce la propria relazione con l’ambiente circostante; non è il mondo che vediamo, ma è la nostra interpretazione di quel mondo e, come tale, richiede la presenza di uno sguardo. Il paesaggio non può, in tal senso, prescindere dagli interrogativi che ogni osservazione comporta: quali sono i messaggi che un determinato paesaggio veicola? Quale è l’ambito culturale nel quale è stato prodotto? Quali fattori ne stabiliscono i codici formali? Domande complesse che ogni immagine più o meno consapevolmente evoca, e alle quali, spesse volte, in qualità di architetti, ci è richiesto di fornire una risposta sintetica. Il problema della forma del paesaggio è, infatti, alla base dei processi di lettura critica che dovrebbero orientare la formazione dell’architetto, specie laddove questa assume (come in molti paesaggi contemporanei) configurazioni complesse, all’interno delle quali risulta ostico orientarsi. I paesaggi tematici affrontati in questo volume nascono dalla constatazione di come il paesaggio sia oggi, spesse volte, poco indagato nei suoi significati più propriamente culturali, scissi e dispersi tra i diversi ambiti e le diverse discipline. Il frastuono prodotto dal dominio pervasivo delle immagini, unito agli effetti imprevisti (e imprevedibili) dei processi di globalizzazione, ci ha obbligati, nel giro di pochi anni, a fare i conti con una serie di paesaggi “difficili”, perché lontani culturalmente, o perché legati a ritmi, dimensioni e tempi profondamente diversi dai nostri, ai quali è necessario fornire una risposta, se si vuole tentare di uscire dalla crisi della nostra professione.
