By writing this book, the author wishes to share his perspective on Reality, the Cosmos, Life, Birth, Death, Rebirth, Transmigration, Divinity, the Karmic cycle, Moksha, Nirvana based on knowledge gathered from experience, Hindu scriptures and customs, Vedic and Puranic stories, the institution of deities, religious rituals and practices, Science and the world at large. In this book, the author has made an effort to trace the rationale behind Hindu myths, Deities, Rituals, and Beliefs. The author draws moral courage and strength to write this book from the institution of Devi/Devta, which forms an integral part of the social fabric of Pahari culture (culture of the people living in the hills) widely spread in the Western Himalayas, especially Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The book’s premise for the plurality of Hindu deities may, in part, be traced to this Devi/Devta culture. The author earnestly believes that the book would make interesting and informative reading, as it presents a perspective that is apparently at variance with some of the popular notions of Reality and Divinity. It is not a commentary or critique on any religious philosophy, beliefs, or scientific discoveries/theories, though reference to them has been liberally made. The author hopes that his perspective would help kindle the imagination and curiosity of the reader to explore the vast and enigmatic Reality/Cosmos at a personal level and find his/her answers to the aforesaid metaphysical matters.

For Mohan, it all begins in his second year at Saint Johns College, a low-profile college in Dharampur, a small town in foothills of Shivalik. Mohan is from a religious family of kathavachaks (Those who recite Scriptures). His grandfather wants to expose him to western education system as he believes that those with the traditional background should be familiar with the modern thought process, and the westernized Indians should take interest in the ancient Indian teachings so as to have a balanced outlook on life. Mohan shares accommodation with Anant who is from a very rich family. Anant is not studious but he has a passion for sports. There is another interesting character, Baldev, who is from a dysfunctional family. Is he worthy of Malas affections? As the story unfolds, there appear other interesting characters like Panther, Sudha, Nalini, Sayeeda, Posco, Verma Sir and Mamaji. The story also contains scenes involving Bollywood, Match Fixing and Betting. All the characters and incidents have been invented by imagination. In this novel, author Dr. Govind Sharma conveys important messages contained in the Indian Scripture Ram Charit Manas to offer a look at duty, sacrifice, and the joint family system. The narrator, Mohan, tells the story of his friends; and in between the scenes, the narrator gives the key messages of Ram Charit Manas by way of his recitals.

The Ramayana, Written In Sanskrit By Valmiki Is Considered To Be The 'Adikavya', The First Ever Poem. Tulsidas Rendered It Into Hindi In The Sixteenth Century. But His 'Ramcharit-Manas' Differs From The Original In Many Ways. It Was Written At A Time When A Very Vast Area Of India Was Under Mughal Rule. Amongst The Hindus, There Were Frequent Controversies Between The Worshippers Of Shiva, Vishnu And The Mother Goddess, And Again Between The Worshippers Of Rama And Krishna. There Were Also Cults Which Were Almost Cut Off From The Mainstream Of Indian Life. It Is To The Credit Of Tulsidas That He Tried To Weave All These Cults Into An Integrated Whole. He Made His Rama Say That He Would Not Tolerate Anyone Who Showed Disrespect To Shiva. He Worshipped Not Only At The Temples Dedicated To Rama But Also At Those Dedicated To Krishna. His Works And Teachings Stressed The Importance Of The Life Of A Householder And Weaned People Away From The Tantric Cults. Tulsidas Hailed From A Poor Family Of Rajapur In Uttar Pradesh. He Was Orphaned Soon After His Birth And Even His Foster-Mother Died When He Was Barely Seven Years Old. When He Was Married, He Became Deeply Attached To His Wife, Ratna. She Was The First Person In His Life Whom He Could Call His Own. One Day Not Finding Her At Home On His Return, He Became Extremely Restless And Rushed To His Father-In-Law'S House In The Dead Of The Night, Braving Heavy Rains And A Storm. But Ratna Rebuked Him And Said, "Had You Loved Rama As Intensely As You Do This Bundle Of Flesh And Bones, You Would Have Overcome All Mortal Fears." This Was The Turning Point In His Life. The Story As Narrated In This Book Is Mostly Based On Legends. A Contemporary Of Shakespeare, Tulsidas (1532-1623) Was Known For Singing The Glory Of Rama, The Prince Of Ayodhya. The Ramcharitmanas, Tulsidas Version Of The Ramayana In Awadhi, A Dialect Of Hindi, Consists Of Over 1,0000 Stanzas Of About 12 To 18 Lines Each. Tulsi'S Words Are Musical And Hypnotic. Every Village And Town In The Hindi Heartland Has A Troupe That Enacts The Story Of Rama Based On Tulsida'S Work.
