Collaboration between prehistorians and palaeoecologists is radically changing our understanding of the relationship between landscape, land use and human settlement in Greece. Contributions range geographically over the contrasting natural and cultural landscapes of northern and southern Greece and the lowlands and highlands, and chronologically over the whole postglacial period, including studies of plant and animal ecology and of palaeoecological formation processes in the present. The difficulty of disentangling climatic and anthropogenic causes of palaeoecological change is a recurrent theme.

Lo scopo della ricerca da cui nasce il volume è stata quella di dotare di profondità storica i paesaggi storici negli aspri territori della montagna appenninica dove i contrasti sociali sono stati ben radicati; signorie forti in grado di accedere alle risorse chiave nell’organizzazione dello spazio, sostituite posteriormente da comunità contadine assai dinamiche e, comunque, frammentate al loro interno dove sopravvivono differenze sociali e orientamenti produttivi contrastanti. Si tratta di una comunità contadina, quella di Gorfigliano, che fino al seicento non dispone sostanzialmente di documentazione scritta,. In questo contesto l’archeologia diventa lo strumento prioritario per dotare di profondità storica vicende e processi sociali che, nonostante la vicinanza in termini cronologici, non trovano riscontro in altre fonti. Con questa ricerca si vuole affrontare da una parte la storia delle società medievali e moderne di un territorio apparentemente conservativo e poco trasformato negli ultimi secoli, includendo a pieno titolo le trasformazioni del paesaggio, dall’altra si definisce un modello di analisi territoriale in grado di utilizzare in forma critica e dialettica diversi registri informativi. Partendo dal prendere in considerazione la valle come un’unica area si ricostruisce le vicende storiche di uno dei villaggi di montagna meno documentati negli ultimi mille trecento anni, privilegiando la dimensione spaziale rispetto a quella temporale. In questo quadro il lavoro integrato di professionalità assai diverse (storici, botanici, architetti, geologi, etnografi, biologi, archeologi,..) è stato essenziale. Il volume porta un contributo concreto alla ricostruzione dei paesaggi storici introducendo innovative tematiche quali lo studio delle aree di alpeggio, degli spazi agrari o delle forme sociali d’uso dello spazio dell’intera valle dell’Acqua Bianca.
