The volume collects the most important papers Pierluigi Donini wrote in the last three decades with the aim of promoting a better assessment of post-hellenistic philosophy. The philosophical relevance of post-hellenistic philosophy is now widely (though not yet universally) recognized. Yet much remains to be done. The common practice of focusing each single school in itself detracts from a balanced assessment of the strategies exploited by many philosophers of the period. On the assumption that debates among schools play a major role in the philosophy of the commentators, Donini concentrates on the interaction between leading Aristotelians and Platonists and demonstrates that the developments of both systems of thought were heavily influenced by a continuous confrontation between the two schools. And whereas in cases such as Alcinous and Aspasius this is basically uncontroversial, for other authors such us Alexander, Antiochus and Plutarch the pioneering work of Donini paves the way for a better understanding of their doctrines and definitely confirms the intellectual importance of the first imperial age, when the foundations were laid of versions of both Aristotelianism and Platonism which were bound to influence the whole history of European thought, from Late Antiquity onwards.

Viaggiatore della vita. Roberto si riconosceva nella definizione, e raccolse “memorie di viaggio”, ma soprattutto quelle “attraverso le donne. Facendo di ogni incontro ed evento metafora del viaggio per luoghi, che pure ha accumulato e inseguito nella vita. Una metafora, ogni incontro ed ogni evento, del viaggio infinito che è la vita. X Quanto le donne fossero state condizionanti nelle scelte della sua vita, lo ha riassunto nelle lettere e lo si ritrova nei racconti/memorie e nei due epistolari, che compongono questa raccolta di scritti.. Che ha consegnato al suo amico di gioventù napoletana, ritrovato in vecchiaia a Roma, perché ne facesse copie e ne programmasse una rilettura insieme alle tre donne con cui, dal rientro a Roma dopo il divorzio in Francia, circa quindici anni prima, si era legato di un’amicizia senza complicazioni sentimentali o anche solo sessuali, ma forse proprio per questo molto forte e sentita anche da parte delle tre donne. Negli scritti non si ritrova un’elegia acritica alle donne, né, nelle frequenti descrizioni erotiche, una esasperata manifestazione di erotismo; che comunque, dove è presente, risulta sempre nelle righe e mostra sempre chiaramente il rispetto per la sensibilità femminile che gli era stato riconosciuto da ogni donna che aveva incrociato la sua vita. È che Roberto considerò la metà del cielo femminile sempre superiore e indissolubilmente complementare a quella maschile, anche – se non soprattutto – nella sessualità. E il migliore complimento che nella vita aveva ricevuto da donne - Roberto ripeteva in ogni occasione - era di mostrare una sensibilità femminile in una mente e un corpo eterosessuali. Ma Roberto è scomparso dopo avere consegnato quegli scritti/ memoria all’autore di questo libro, nel quale li ha ordinati rispettando la cronologia in cui li ha trovati, ha organizzato la loro rilettura, definendola “un cenacolo serale”, articolato su due lunedi. Partecipanti, con lo stesso Autore, le tre donne legate al protagonista dal suo rientro a Roma, da strettissima amicizia - ognuna con una professione di successo nel campo giornalistico di costume, di editoria musicale, e di psicologia - e con la saltuaria partecipazione di pochissimi altri amici a cui Roberto x era legato. L’Autore ha inteso così rispettare – dopo la sua comparsa - quanto Roberto si prefiggeva di realizzare egli stesso.
