Excerpt from A History of Ancient Egypt, Vol. 1 of 2 The work here offered to the public, conceived and commenced in the year 1876, was designed to supply what seemed a crying need of English literature viz., an account of Ancient Egypt, combining its antiquities with its history, addressed partly to the eye, and presenting to the reader, within a reasonable compass, the chief points of Egyptian life manners, customs, art, science, literature, religion together with a tolerably full statement of the general course of historical events, whereof Egypt was the scene, from the foundation of the monarchy to the loss of independence. Existing English histories of Ancient Egypt were either slight and scantly illustrated, like those of Canon Trevor and Dr. Birch, or wanting in illustrations altogether, like Mr. Kenricks, or not confined to the period which seemed to deserve special attention, like the Egypt of Mr. Samuel Sharpe. Accordingly, the present writer, having become aware that no History of Egypt on a large scale was contemplated by Dr. Birch, designed in 1876 the work now published, regarding it in part as necessary to round off and complete his other principal labors in the historical field, in part as calculated to fill up a gap, which it was important to fill up, in the historical literature of his country. Since his intention was announced, and the sheets of his first volume to some extent printed off, English literature has been enriched by two most important publications on the subject of Egypt Dr. Birchs excellent edition of Wilkinsons Manners and Customs of the Ancient Egyptians, and the translation of Dr. Brugschs Geschichte Aegyptens made by the late Mr. Danby Seymour and Mr. Philip Smith. The successful interpretation of the ancient writings of Egypt, Chaldæa, and Persia, which has distinguished our times, makes it necessary that the history of antiquity should be rewritten. Documents that for thousands of years lay hidden beneath the soil, and inscriptions which, like those of Egypt and Persia, long offered themselves to the gaze of man merely to excite his impotent curiosity, have now been deciphered and made to render up their secrets for the guidance of the historian. By the help of those strings of hieroglyphs and of cuneiform characters, illustrated by paintings and sculptured reliefs, we are enabled to separate the truth from the falsehood, the chaff from the wheat, in the narratives of the Greek writers who busied themselves with those nations of Africa and Asia which preceded their own in the ways of civilization. Day by day, as new monuments have been discovered and more certain methods of reading their inscriptions elaborated, we have added to the knowledge left us by Herodotus and Diodorus Siculus, to our acquaintance with those empires on the Euphrates and the Nile which were already in old age when the Greeks were yet struggling to emerge from their primitive barbarism. Even in the cases of Greece and Rome, whose histories are supplied in their main lines by their classic writers, the study of hitherto neglected writings discloses many new and curious details. The energetic search for ancient inscriptions, and the scrupulous and ingenious interpretation of their meaning, which we have witnessed and are witnessing, have revealed to us many interesting facts of which no trace is to be found in Thucydides or Xenophon, in Livy or Tacitus; enabling us to enrich with more than one feature the picture of private and public life which they have handed down to us. In the effort to embrace the life of ancient times as a whole, many attempts have been made to fix the exact place in it occupied by art, but those attempts have never been absolutely successful, because the comprehension of works of art, of plastic creations in the widest significance of that word, demands an amount of special knowledge which the great majority of historians are without; art has a method and language of its own, which obliges those who wish to learn it thoroughly to cultivate their taste by frequenting the principal museums of Europe, by visiting distant regions at the cost of considerable trouble and expense, by perpetual reference to the great collections of engravings, photographs, and other reproductions which considerations of space and cost prevent the savant from possessing at home. More than one learned author has never visited Italy or Greece, or has found no time to examine their museums, each of which contains but a small portion of the accumulated remains of antique art. Some connoisseurs do not even live in a capital, but dwell far from those public libraries, which often contain valuable collections, and sometimes—when they are not packed away in cellars or at the binder's—allow them to be studied by the curious.[2] The study of art, difficult enough in itself, is thus rendered still more arduous by the obstacles which are thrown in its way. The difficulty of obtaining materials for self-improvement in this direction affords the true explanation of the absence, in modern histories of antiquity, of those laborious researches which have led to such great results since Winckelmann founded the science of archæology as we know it. A pioneer of British Egyptology, Sir John Gardner Wilkinson (1797-1875) first travelled to Egypt in 1821, the year before Champollion published his breakthrough work on the Rosetta Stone. As public interest in Egypt grew, Wilkinson studied and sketched the country's major archaeological sites, most notably the tombs of Thebes. His Topography of Thebes and General View of Egypt (1835) and Modern Egypt and Thebes (1843) are also reissued in this series. Excerpt from Ancient Egypt, Vol. 1: 1920 1923 At last it is justifiable again for writers to meet their friends in these pages. Our perils as a nation are by no means over, but they do not need to be met by every kind of energy that was required two years ago, to save our civilisation from the flood of destruction. Great have been the changes since the peace of the world was broken. In Egypt the main actors are gone: Sir Gaston Maspero, his son Jean Maspero, the indefatigable Legrain, worn out prematurely, and the ever-useful Barsanti. With the passing of these the face of affairs is changed. On the English side other losses are felt: Sir Armand Ruffer, Horace Thompson, James Dixon, and K. T. Frost, were all victims of the war, to the loss of Egyptology; and at home the early death of Prof. Leonard King has left history and archaeology crippled. The necessary inspection of sites in Syria and Palestine was carried out by two former workers of the British School in Egypt, Capt. Mackay and Capt. Engelbach, under the orders of Field-Marshal Sir Edmund Allenby. This was the first step towards preservation, and their reports give details of the work and restrictions necessary on each site. The latest School of Archaeology is that for Jerusalem, founded by a joint committee of the Palestine Exploration Fund and the British Academy. Prof. Garstang has actively organised it, Capt. Mackay will be Chief Inspector of Sites, and probably another of our former excavators will be Librarian and Registrar. The British School in Egypt, with a large staff, hopes to have as full a season of excavation as in the past. In the United States a new basis of work has been started as the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, under the efficient management of Prof. Breasted. In his recent address he takes his stand on the importance of all kinds of evidence for history, and places philology in its true position as an interpreter of some evidence of historic times, but only thus touching a brief part of man's past. The whole evidences of the past are to be the care of the new Oriental Institute, which thus comes in line with what has always been the system of the British School in Egypt. With much regret it is found that the present costs of production, being about doubled, must make some difference to the issue of this Journal. At the present time it is unreasonable to expect anyone to pay more to meet the cost, and therefore some reduction in pages and illustration is necessary. So soon as our readers will expand the circulation to its former extent, the previous scale of issue will be resumed. The summarising of what has been published abroad during the war is the prime requirement to place readers in touch with present conditions.
