In this book about the Ancient Landscapes of South Texas, we travel from deep time at the forming of the solar system all the way to the algal mats that review themselves with each tidal cycle. We explore the evidence of our changing landscape. Ancient beaches and drowned shorelines, volcanoes, and shifting sand, giant oysters and mammoths, petrified forests and thousand-year-old living trees, tiny zircon crystals and a powerful river are part of our natural landscape. Juxtaposed with this is how this landscape has, for millennia, shaped the lives of people in the past. Today, in the Anthropocene, we see how human activities, dating largely from the Industrial Revolution, changed the earth's landscape and ecosystems. The photographs in this book tell the story and should encourage Geotourism and a broader celebration of our Public Heritage of South Texas along the Rio Grande. Keywords are: Geoheritage, Geotourism, Human-land interaction, Anthropocene, South Texas Geology, Rio Grande Valley Geology and Culture, Ecotourism

Allow yourself to be taken back into deep geologic time when strange creatures roamed the Earth and Western North America looked completely unlike the modern landscape. Volcanic islands stretched from Mexico to Alaska, most of the Pacific Rim didn’t exist yet, at least not as widespread dry land; terranes drifted from across the Pacific to dock on Western Americas’ shores creating mountains and more volcanic activity. Landscapes were transposed north or south by thousands of kilometers along huge fault systems. Follow these events through paleogeographic maps that look like satellite views of ancient Earth. Accompanying text takes the reader into the science behind these maps and the geologic history that they portray. The maps and text unfold the complex geologic history of the region as never seen before. Winner of the 2021 John D. Haun Landmark Publication Award, AAPG-Rocky Mountain Section

Ancestral Landscapes Of The Pueblo World written by James Elliot Snead and has been published by University of Arizona Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Social Science categories.

The eastern Pueblo heartland, located in the northern Rio Grande country of New Mexico, has fascinated archaeologists since the 1870s. In Ancestral Landscapes of the Pueblo World, James Snead uses an exciting new approachÑ landscape archaeologyÑto understand ancestral Pueblo communities and the way the people consciously or unconsciously shaped the land around them. Snead provides detailed insight into ancestral Puebloan cultures and societies using an approach he calls Òcontextual experience,Ó employing deep mapping and community-scale analysis. This strategy goes far beyond the standard archaeological approaches, using historical ethnography and contemporary Puebloan perspectives to better understand how past and present Pueblo worldviews and meanings are imbedded in the land. Snead focuses on five communities in the Pueblo heartlandÑBurnt Corn, TÕobimpaenge, Tsikwaiye, Los Aguajes, and TsankawiÑusing the results of intensive archaeological surveys to discuss the changes that occurred in these communities between AD 1250 and 1500. He examines the history of each area, comparing and contrasting them via the themes of Òprovision,Ó Òidentity,Ó and Òmovement,Ó before turning to questions regarding social, political, and economic organization. This revolutionary study thus makes an important contribution to landscape archaeology and explains how the Precolumbian Pueblo landscape was formed.

The Political Economy Of Ancient Mesoamerica written by Vernon Lee Scarborough and has been published by UNM Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with History categories.

One of the most culturally diverse regions of the ancient world, Mesoamerica was also one of the fledgling areas for state formation. The case studies in this volume interpret Mesoamerican civilization through the emergence, resilience, and occasional demise of Mesoamerica's early and developing political economies. An exploration of the unique adaptations and approaches taken by Mesoamerican societies to cope with their evolving landscapes provides insight on how these states were organized and the varying ways in which state affairs were conducted between regions and through time. Although several factors are presented and discussed for the rise and fall of the many complex societies, the book maintains a consistent emphasis on the political economy and its transformative effects over labor, land, and water. Inspired by the impact of the annual yearbook Research in Economic Anthropology (REA) and its longstanding editor, Barry L. Isaac, the contributors in this volume were assembled to honor Isaac and selected based on their previous association with Isaac and REA as well as their knowledge of particular regions of Mesoamerica.
