To ensure consistency, the presentation of both terms follows the same structure: First of all the definition and etymology of each term is given; their principal characteristics are mentioned and explicated. Additionally the related concept of "similes" is defined and compared to metaphors. Due to the fact that the definitions of the term "metaphor" vary depending on the theories they are based on, a supplementary outline of these theories is required. Subsequently the terms are classified into categories in order to allow a more detailed analysis; examples are cited. The paper ends with a comparison of the two concepts.

Städtebauliche Konzepte werden meist in mittel- und langfristigen Zeiträumen umgesetzt. In der Zwischenzeit unterliegen sie häufig unterschiedlichen Einflüssen. Gleichzeitig verlieren die Entwurfsverfasser weitgehend die Möglichkeit, auf Veränderungen zu reagieren. Im Gegensatz zum Hochbau-Entwurf ist der städtebauliche Entwurf daher häufig mit einem bestimmten Maß an Unschärfe verbunden. Ziel der Arbeit ist es, Aussagen zu treffen zum gestalterischen Umgang mit dem Phänomen der 'Unschärfe'. Dazu werden deutsche und niederländische Städtebau-Konzepte der 1990er Jahre untersucht, deren Autoren bewusst ein bestimmtes Maß an gestalterisch-konzeptioneller Unschärfe berücksichtigen. Inzwischen weitgehend umgesetzt, erlauben sie einen Vergleich zwischen den zugrunde gelegten konzeptionellen Annahmen und ihrer Wirksamkeit bei der Umsetzung. Die Arbeit illustriert die Anwendungsmöglichkeiten der eingesetzten Entwurfsinstrumente sowie ihre Wechselwirkung untereinander. Die Ergebnisse ergänzen und präzisieren das bestehende städtebauliche Entwurfsrepertoire. Prozessbegleitend können sie Planer, Behörden, Investoren und Betroffene bei der Einschätzung städtebaulicher Projekte unterstützen und ihre Aushandlungsziele präzisieren.
