Andr Poitiers' adventure in design has been one of experimentation, an experimentation in which he has pursued difficult objectives and pushed himself to the edge of known territory. The expertise is there, acquired in the studio of Norman Foster, but his dream has invaded the territory of architecture and generated intentionally provocative figures. Poitiers picked his own, original way, driven by futuristic and iconoclastic impetus. Technology and New Pop seem to have been the hardware and software of his path. The most recent goal on Poitiers' journey is Plasma, the liquid, organic and living material, liable to alter in relation to functional and environmental factors. Poitiers' unusual and individual approach to designing is reflected in the graphics and presentation of the book.

"TransUrbanism is urbanism plus transformation. TransUrbanism is urbanism plus globalization. The city is no longer a clearly localizable spatial unit, but has transformed into an "urban field," a collection of activities instead of a material structure. Cities today are in a state of continuous decomposition, but are also continually reorganizing and rearranging themselves, expanding and shrinking." "TransUrbanism is a design strategy that allows cities to organize themselves as complex systems, where small local structures incorporate global flows."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Since early Christianity, wood, earth, water and stone were taken from loca sancta to signify them elsewhere. Unlike textual or visual representations, natural materials not only represent the Holy Land; they are part of it. This book examines the processes of their sanctification and how, although inherently abstract, they become charged with meaning.

A full and provocative reappraisal of the Bayeux "Tapestry", its origins, design and patronage. Aspects of the Bayeux Tapestry (in fact an embroidered hanging) have always remained mysterious, despite much scholarly investigation, not least its design and patron. Here, in the first full-length interdisciplinary approach to the subject, the authors (an art historian and a historian) consider these and other issues. Rejecting the prevalent view that it was commissioned by Odo, the bishop of Bayeux and half-brother of William the Conqueror, or by some other comparable patron, they bring new evidence to bear on the question of its relationship to the abbey of St Augustine's, Canterbury. From the study of art-historical, archeological, literary, historical and documentary materials, they conclude that the monks of St Augustine's designed the hanging for display in their abbey church to tell their own story of how England was invaded and conquered in 1066. Elizabeth Carson Pastan is a Professor of Art History at Emory University; Stephen D. White is Asa G. Candler Professor of Medieval History (emeritus), Emory University, and an Honorary Professor of Mediaeval History at the University of St Andrews.

Patrick J. Geary's highly acclaimed collection of source materials on the Western medieval world is well-known for offering an excellent selection of substantial excerpts—or entire documents wherever possible—from the most widely studied historical texts. This much-anticipated fifth edition features a larger format, as well as enlarged type, to make the collection more reader-friendly. Study questions have been added at the end of each section to help students focus on key points in the text. New documents on the Black Death, William of Rubruck, and Marco Polo are included, as well as a new selection from St. Benedict's Rule for Monasteries and a new translation of Einhard's The Life of Charlemagne. Two color photo sections have been added, introducing students to fascinating medieval art such as a fifth-century ivory from Constantinople, the two earliest images of Joan of Arc, the Sachsenspiegel, and a shirt that belonged to Queen Bathild.
