Andrea Zanzotto is one of the most important and acclaimed poets of postwar Italy. This collection of ninety-one pseudo-haiku in English and Italian—written over several months during 1984 and then revised slowly over the years—confirms his commitment to experimentation throughout his life. Haiku for a Season represents a multilevel experiment for Zanzotto: first, to compose poetry bilingually; and second, to write in a form foreign to Western poetry. The volume traces the life of a woman from youth to adulthood, using the seasons and the varying landscape as a mirror to reflect her growth and changing attitudes and perceptions. With a lifelong interest in the intersections of nature and culture, Zanzotto displays here his usual precise and surprising sense of the living world. These never-before-published original poems in English appear alongside their Italian versions—not strict translations but parallel texts that can be read separately or in conjunction with the originals. As a sequence of interlinked poems, Haiku for a Season reveals Zanzotto also as a master poet of minimalism. Zanzotto’s recent death is a blow to world poetry, and the publication of this book, the last that he approved in manuscript, will be an event in both the United States and in Italy.

Il libro raccoglie i risultati di un quarantennio di studi sul rapporto fra lingua e dialetto nella poesia italiana contemporanea, sulle nuove vie che imboccate dalla poesia dialettale nella seconda metà del Novecento, un periodo la poesia in dialetto sembra abbandonare le parlate dei grandi centri urbani per adottare idiomi minori e appartati, spesso mai messi prima per iscritto, alla ricerca di una lingua inedita e pura della poesia. Il saggio di apertura è dedicato a Pier Paolo Pasolini e al friulano delle "Poesie a Casarsa" (1942). Sono poi presi in esame l’arcaico lucano di Tursi di Albino Pierro, il solighese aspro e scheggiato di Andrea Zanzotto, il vicentino di Fernando Bandini che si intreccia all’italiano e al latino, e infine, quasi a chiudere il cerchio, il casarsese praticato nelle sue prime esperienze liriche da Nico Naldini, sulla scia del cugino Pasolini. I poeti di questo ideale simposio illustrano, nelle loro diverse manifestazioni, anche i rapporti di continuità e di rottura, di consonanza e di conflitto, di amore e odio, che si sono istituiti fra lingua e dialetto nella pratica poetica dell’ultimo mezzo secolo o poco più.

What does the growing interest of literary criticism towards the representation of nature and its ethical implications tell us? In which folds of narrative, poetic or cinematographic discourse do the manifestations of a continuously renewed sensitivity for the contradictions of progress, for the precarious coexistence between human, animal and plant agents lie? And what kind of relationships can there be between the semantics of places and landscapes, expressed in a fictional world, and eco-criticism? Sixteen essays suspended between 'text' analysis and theory of criticism are solicited and collected by Nicola Turi, in an attempt to answer these and other questions affecting the function and orientations of contemporary criticism, its ability to give back the forms of artistic language, and at the same time its recurring temptation to confront, as Calvino's Bradamante would say, with the «life behind it that pushes and disarranges all the leaves of the book»
