This volume addresses the question of how the rapidly rising cost of living in prospering cities affects the everyday life and life plans of the middle class. Particularly the depths of focus of a cultural anthropological, ethnographic view of the lived everyday life of people thus facilitates insight and understanding which is missing in certain macro perspectives in the economics and social sciences. Although urban allotment gardening dates back to the nineteenth century, it has recently undergone a renaissance of interest and popularity. These three dimensions determine which resources are necessary to create smart cities. But a smart city, ideal in the way it channels and resolves technological, social and economic-growth issues, requires many additional elements to function at a high-performance level, such as culture (an environment that empowers and engages citizens) and physical infrastructure designed to foster competition and collaboration, encourage new ideas and actions, and set the stage for new business creation. Die Analyse von Interviews mit Parkbesucherinnen und -besuchern in drei ausgewählten Parkanlagen der Stadt Zürich bekundet die Vielfalt subjektiver Wahrnehmungen und ihre Auswirkungen auf die Nutzung dieser Orte, beleuchtet aber gleichzeitig den Einfluss der Gestaltung auf die Wahrnehmung und Nutzung. Die unterschiedlichen Raumkonstruktionen eint die Gemeinsamkeit, dass für den Aufenthalt im Stadtpark das persönliche Erleben im Mittelpunkt steht, während spezifische Funktionen und Tätigkeiten von zweitrangiger Bedeutung sind. Im Gegensatz zu touristischen Erlebniswelten bilden Stadtparks Räume, die sich durch ihre Alltäglichkeit auszeichnen. Argumentativ begründen sie, dass sie lernende, kompetente und sinnhaft handelnde Subjekte einer besonderen alltäglichen Lebenswelt sind. Sie nehmen die beschädigte Identität nicht an.
