Buku ini lahir dari kegelisahan akan gejala arogansi dalam hidup beragama, yakni bagaimana orang-orang bisa dengan semena-mena berwacana tentang Tuhan dan menyematkan banyak atribut pada-Nya. Muncul pertanyaan, apakah mungkin dan masuk akal manusia yang imanen ini berpikir dan berwacana tentang Tuhan yang transenden? Buku ini ingin menjawab pertanyaan itu melalui gagasan ketuhanan Immanuel Kant dalam Kritik der reinen Vernunft (KrV) yang diterbitkan pada 1781 dan 1787. Dalam KrV, Kant menyelidiki syarat-syarat kemungkinan pengetahuan manusia. Secara khusus, dia meninjau sah-tidaknya pengetahuan manusia tentang Tuhan dalam bab “Ideal Budi Murni” (das Ideal der reinen Vernunft) dan “Lampiran Dialektika Transendental” (Appendix). Kant melacak genealogi Tuhan sebagai Ideal budi murni dan menyatakan mustahilnya tiga argumen klasik untuk membuktikan adanya Tuhan. Baginya, dalam budi murni, Tuhan hanyalah Idea yang memiliki fungsi regulatif terhadap pengetahuan manusia dan tidak dapat menjadi objek pengetahuan itu. Kritisisme Kant membantah segala kemungkinan pengetahuan teoretis yang konstitutif tentang Tuhan. Dengan kata lain, sikap Kant terhadap Tuhan berciri agnostik. Gagasan Kant cukup efektif untuk membuat orang sadar akan keterbatasan budinya. Namun, keterbatasan itu tidak bisa menjadi alasan untuk sepenuhnya menolak realitas yang transenden.
