Die historisch-kritische Ausgabe der Briefe Goethes bietet erstmals die vollständige und detailgetreue Präsentation sowie die umfassende Kommentierung sämtlicher Briefe Goethes. Da die Mehrzahl der Briefe seit ihrer Veröffentlichung in der Weimarer Ausgabe (erschienen 1887 bis 1919) nicht wieder gedruckt und kommentiert wurden, liegt mit dieser Edition nach fast einhundert Jahren ein neues Standardwerk der Goethe- und Klassik-Forschung vor. Seit 1990 wurden über 500 Briefe neu aufgefunden, diese werden hier erstmals präsentiert. Der umfangreiche und vielschichtige Kommentar erläutert die Briefe Goethes nicht nur sachlich-inhaltlich, sondern erschließt auch deren biographische, soziale und rezeptionale Aspekte. Der vorliegende Band enthält die Briefe Goethes von 1785 bis zum Beginn seiner Reise nach Italien Anfang September 1786. Sie zeigen Goethe eingebunden in die Belange der Weimarer Residenz, des Hofes und der Administration, zugleich aber bemüht, Grenzen zu überwinden durch Dichtung und Wissenschaft, ein Konflikt, der den Entschluss zur Reise nach Italien reifen lässt. Die Fülle der Dienstgeschäfte beansprucht über Gebühr: Geheimes Consilium, Kammer, Wege- und Wasserbau, Güterzerschlagung, das Ilmenauer Bergwerk, der Beitritt Sachsen-Weimar und Eisenachs zum Fürstenbund. Die Naturlehre bleibt stete Herausforderung. Zu Anatomie, Geologie und Mineralogie tritt das Studium der Botanik. Der Roman "Wilhelm Meisters theatralische Sendung" wächst, ein neues Singspiel, "Die ungleichen Hausgenossen", wird begonnen, und die Komposition Kaysers zu "Scherz, List und Rache" verlangt seine Aufmerksamkeit. Goethe reist des Sommers nach Karlsbad, und er bereitet die erste Ausgabe seiner "Schriften" im Göschen-Verlag vor. An all dem Anteil nehmend: Charlotte von Stein. Die 260 Briefe an sie bilden einen Hauptteil dieses Bandes und gewähren Einblicke in das Leben Goethes in seinem ersten Weimarer Jahrzehnt. Im Kommentarband werden die Briefe Goethes aus diesem Zeitraum erstmals umfassend wissenschaftlich kommentiert. Neben Begriffs- und Sacherklärungen, der Erläuterung von biographischen und historischen Zusammenhängen, der Identifikation von Personen und dem Nachweis von Zitaten widmet sich die Kommentierung insbesondere den Persönlichkeiten der Adressaten und deren Beziehungen zu Goethe. Auf diese Aspekte gehen u. a. übergreifende Erläuterungen und zusammenfassende Überblickskommentare ein, die über den Einzelbrief hinaus und im Zusammenhang mit dem ersten Brief Goethes an den jeweiligen Empfänger die Gesamtkorrespondenz mit einem Adressaten beleuchten. Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt bildet die Neudatierung der über 120 nicht oder unvollständig datierten Briefe des Bandes, zu der erstmals durchgängig auch eine umfassende Begründung gegeben wird.
