This book traces the history and development of the port of Benguela, the third largest port of slave embarkation on the coast of Africa, from the early seventeenth to the mid-nineteenth century. Benguela, located on the central coast of present-day Angola, was founded by the Portuguese in the early seventeenth century. In discussing the impact of the transatlantic slave trade on African societies, Mariana P. Candido explores the formation of new elites, the collapse of old states and the emergence of new states. Placing Benguela in an Atlantic perspective, this study shows how events in the Caribbean and Brazil affected social and political changes on the African coast. This book emphasizes the importance of the South Atlantic as a space for the circulation of people, ideas and crops.

Este livro trata do império português nos séculos XIX e XX, analisando as políticas coloniais e alguns processos sociais e económicos que o atravessaram. O objetivo é reconstituir o ponto de vista dos que se confrontaram em diferentes situações coloniais, sem esquecer a historiografia sobre o império, as visões ideológicas sobre a questão das raças e um vasto leque de discursos, incluindo neles os que se reivindicaram da ordem das representações literárias. Trata-se de um trabalho de descrição, de reconstituição e de análise, nalguns casos bem minucioso. O mesmo carreia consigo um ponto de vista ético - que também pode ser concebido como um grito ou uma chamada à responsabilidade dos historiadores, jornalistas e investigadores de ofício contra duas posições que acabam por ter mais pontos em comum do que à primeira vista possa parecer. Por um lado, os que procuram dizer que o império nunca existiu, quer porque foi excecional, como durante o Estado Novo se procurou fazer crer, quer porque serviu propósitos mais New Age, que o tomam como um amontoado de discursos demonstrativos da sua inerente debilidade. Por outro lado, este livro pretende ganhar distância em relação às reduções do império e do colonialismo a um reportório dos legados, sobretudo dos legados bons, por oposição aos maus, e outras patranhas promovidas por um discurso académico circular em torno das questões da memória, pouco ou nada envolvido com os arquivos coloniais.

Tal elogio pode parecer exagerado para quem não conhece a importância do autor, mas lendo outros textos sobre a obra, não lhe faltam outros elogios semelhantes. O ex-presidente da República e sociólogo Fernando Henrique Cardoso, que inclusive é responsável pelo texto de apresentação da edição da casa, avalia que este é um texto que seria lido pelo próximo milênio. Mas afinal, por que a obra e todos os seus estudos se tornaram tão importantes para entender o país? Casa Grande & Senzala (1933) é o primeiro livro da trilogia que segue com Sobrados e mucambos (1936) e Ordem e progresso (1959). Com um box exclusivo e intitulado de O Brasil segundo Gilberto Freyre, lançado em 2023 pela Global Editora, os três volumes se complementam e formam um estudo meticuloso, instigante e essencial para entender o Brasil. Ainda segundo Fernando Henrique, Freyre tinha a "pachorra e a paixão pelo detalhe" e, por isso, "inova nas análises sociais da época". No seu clássico absoluto, Gilberto Freyre não apenas incorpora o exercício de funções sociais definidas do senhor de engenho, do latifundiário, do escravo e do bacharel, mas explora também a vida privada. Ou seja, o autor fala sobre os hábitos alimentares, diários e até mesmo sexuais, passando por assuntos como arquitetura e moda. Segundo o ex-presidente, o Brasil do autor "tem alma, intriga, tem calor, incoerência, sussurro, discurso e coração". O segundo volume que compõe o box é Sobrados e mucambos, um livro completamente diferente do primeiro. Apesar de ser uma continuação, ele faz uma ligação da "casa" com a figura patriarcal, latifundiária e escravocrata. Isto é, casa não apenas no sentido literal da palavra, mas também as casas sociais e todos os valores que vem das poderosas instituições. Na introdução presente na 2a edição do livro, o autor completa: "a casa-grande completada simbioticamente pela senzala, o sobrado em oposição extrema ao mucambo, à palhoça ao rancho (...)" Concluindo o que começou em 1933, Ordem e progresso é o terceiro da trilogia e é considerado, segundo Nicolau Sevcenko, o mais "experimental" dos livros de Freyre, característica que ressalta sua narrativa modernista. O texto mostra as alterações sociais, culturais e históricas ocorridas ao final do século 19, abordando o declínio patriarcal e a consolidação do mercado capitalista, baseado no trabalho assalariado. Apesar de bastante distintos entre si, o que liga os três livros é a temática e a metodologia tão característica de Gilberto Freyre. Além disso, as edições da Global vem sempre com conteúdos extras que complementam a experiência. Casa Grande & Senzala, por exemplo, contém um mapa detalhado da Casa-grande do engenho da Noruega, antes engenho dos bois, em Pernambuco. Além de ter um trabalho impecável de pesquisa e teoria, algo que as edições da Global Editora refletem com excelência, o autor tinha uma maneira viva na forma de abordar o Brasil, explorando sua história e as consequências da mesma (como suas manifestações culturais), de forma que nunca tinha sido feito antes.

Conflict, Memory Transfers and the Reshaping of Europe discusses processes of memory construction associated with the realities of war and genocide, totalitarianism, colonialism as well as trans-border dialogues in the overcoming of conflict memories. It is based on the premise that there are no available clear-cut or definite positions to approach the problematic issues of conflict, memory and history. Consequently, it examines and articulates across several different media discourses, problems, contexts and considerations of value. Its scope is thus deliberately interdisciplinary, drawing on the cross-fertilization of diverse research methods. The book addresses a number of issues and raises questions that have been crucial to our modern thought, and problematic or even inexplicable to any cultural theory that approaches history with an ethical approach. It works through and evaluates ongoing representative processes, strategies and practices, next to longstanding constraints, dilemmas and taboos regarding discussions of contentious matters. The different perspectives from which the issues of conflict, identity and memory are examined, in authoritarian, new European and (post-) colonial contexts, provide examples of power and conflict memory intervening in discourse and areas of cultural practice, destabilizing fixed or encoded meaning. It examines how the “making sense” of our memories—so vital for the qualification of culture and social practices—is about concepts and ideas, as well as emotions and attachments, i.e. meaning resulting from effective social exchange framed by specific contexts of interpretation. As such, the book is also a contribution to a memory culture that is pushing forward the clarification of conflicts, crystallizations of tension and all sorts of threads that bind us, very often invisibly, to the past.

Intonations tells the story of how Angola’s urban residents in the late colonial period (roughly 1945–74) used music to talk back to their colonial oppressors and, more importantly, to define what it meant to be Angolan and what they hoped to gain from independence. A compilation of Angolan music is included in CD format. Marissa J. Moorman presents a social and cultural history of the relationship between Angolan culture and politics. She argues that it was in and through popular urban music, produced mainly in the musseques (urban shantytowns) of the capital city, Luanda, that Angolans forged the nation and developed expectations about nationalism. Through careful archival work and extensive interviews with musicians and those who attended performances in bars, community centers, and cinemas, Moorman explores the ways in which the urban poor imagined the nation. The spread of radio technology and the establishment of a recording industry in the early 1970s reterritorialized an urban-produced sound and cultural ethos by transporting music throughout the country. When the formerly exiled independent movements returned to Angola in 1975, they found a population receptive to their nationalist message but with different expectations about the promises of independence. In producing and consuming music, Angolans formed a new image of independence and nationalist politics.
