In this text, readers can attend to the precise details of explanations and descriptions as expressed in the Reading Standards for Literacy in Science and Technical Subjects. They learn about animal diversity and investigate feeding differences. Animal locomotion, habitats, methods animals use to defend themselves, reproduction, and animal associations and symbioses (such as mutualisms, commensalism, and parasitisms) are explored in depth. This captivating narrative also provides students with informative sidebars to help clarify concepts, including "Closeup" boxes on key topics, "Try This" boxes that encourage students to test experiments, "What Do You Think?" sidebars that pose questions to examine students' reading comprehension, "Applications" boxes that show how biological facts enhance daily life and technology, "Red Herring" sidebars that describe failed biological theories, and "Genetic Perspective" boxes that outline the latest genetic research. The text also includes a biography on Charles Darwin and a timeline.

The herd dynamics model (HDM) component of the Linked Economic and Animal Systems (LEAS) model specifically documented here is developed in the context of the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Livestock Systems financed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and managed by the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Animal Sciences. The main objective of this project is to develop a comprehensive analytical approach or systems model capable of assessing (i) how animal herd or flock sizes change over time and in response to on-farm policies; (ii) how alternative national trends and policies affect future development of the livestock system as a whole; (iii) how changes in livestock policies affect people working throughout the livestock system; and (iv) how changes in animal-source food (ASF) production and prices affect the real incomes and consumption patterns of different population groups. The HDM developed provides a highly detailed description of the cattle sector while laying a framework that can be easily adapted to other types of livestock. The model allows one to closely examine the performance of the livestock sector disaggregated by agroecology zones or regions. The HDM is linked both ways with a core economywide model through economic variables such as relative prices of livestock activities, prices and availability of intermediate inputs including feed, and changes in supply of livestock capital in the meat and milk production sectors. Given the complex interplay in the livestock sector such as offtake decisions, death rates, milk and meat yield, and feeding practices (through quality indexed feed demand), the HDM developed under this project is a fully dynamic livestock sector model that provides several avenues for policy analysis on livestock management, the sector’s future trajectory, and its dynamics, given risks and opportunities within the sector and beyond.

"Principles of Biology: Animal Systems" is a part of the college-level Principles of Biology course series textbooks. It is a tutorial written in questions and answers format to describe the principles of anatomy and physiology in the biological systems, including evolution and the functions of each organ system. This book contains chapters in biological principles, scientific methods, biological system, nervous system, sensory system, motor system, endocrine system, reproductive system, circulatory system, respiratory system, immune system, renal system, digestive system, and origin of species. It is a study guide with in-depth explanations. It is written in question-and-answer format so that it provides students with immediate feedback for every question they may ask on each of the topics. This also provides an interactive dialog with the students so that they are engaged in their learning. It also provides with further explanations of each answer so that students can understand the materials in details. It also provides the students with examples to illustrate the concepts. Each section is written in a modular-unit formtat that is self-contained for easy reading. This allows the students to learn each topic incrementally without relying on re-reading the previous sections. This facilitates the learning style of both sequential-learners and analytical-learners to acquire the knowledge intuitively. The principles and concepts are introduced systematically so students can learn the concept and retain the materials analytically and logically without memorizing the trivial facts. This will help students build the foundation for more advanced level topics to be introduced subsequently.

This two-volume work provides an overview on various state of the art experimental and statistical methods, modeling approaches and software tools that are available to generate, integrate and analyze multi-omics datasets in order to detect biomarkers, genetic markers and potential causal genes for improved animal production and health. The book will contain online resources where additional data and programs can be accessed. Some chapters also come with computer programming codes and example datasets to provide readers hands-on (computer) exercises. This first volume presents the basic principles and concepts of systems biology with theoretical foundations including genetic, co-expression and metabolic networks. It will introduce to multi omics components of systems biology from genomics, through transcriptomics, proteomics to metabolomics. In addition it will highlight statistical methods and (bioinformatic) tools available to model and analyse these data sets along with phenotypes in animal production and health. This book is suitable for both students and teachers in animal sciences and veterinary medicine as well as to researchers in this discipline.

She used to be a soldier. Then anti-technology fanatics captured her and ripped her implants from her body. Without them, now she’s nothing but a two-legged animal. A weak animal, with only the strength of her organic flesh. An ignorant animal, with only the information from her organic senses. A rabid animal, with uncontrolled neurochemicals flooding her organic brain with emotions and desires. Emotions like rage. Desires like vengeance. But she lost something else along with her implants. Something more important than her strength and her perceptions and her human reason. And only her captors can help her find it again. This short story is 6800 words long. It can also be found in Digital Flesh, a science fiction short story collection.
