Die vorliegende Studie vermittelt einen grundlegenden Eindruck von der Welt des Rohstoffhandels. Der Autor gibt einen Überblick über die grundlegenden Eigenschaften von Rohstoffen und Rohstoffinvestments, außerdem werden verschiedene Möglichkeiten aufgezeigt, in Rohstoffe zu investieren. Im Rohstoffhandel gibt es eine eigene Sprache, die näher beleuchtet und anhand von Beispielen erklärt wird. Zentrales Thema dieser Studie ist es, die Möglichkeiten deutscher institutioneller Investoren in Rohstoffe zu investieren darzustellen. Dabei wird im Speziellen auf die Investmentfonds und Versicherungsunternehmen eingegangen. Wenn ein Investor in Aktien, Anleihen oder Devisen investieren will, sollte er auch die Rohstoffmärkte verstehen. Rohstoffe gehören in jedes gut diversifizierte Depot. Aus Rohstoffinvestments gehen enorme Chancen hervor. Bringt ein Investor sie in sein Portfolio ein, trägt dies zu einer günstigeren Risikostreuung bei. Gerade im Hinblick auf die Finanzkrise und der folgenden Schwächung der Märkte wächst bei vielen Investoren der Wunsch nach einer breiteren Streuung ihrer Anlagerisiken. Rohstoffe bieten ein breites Spektrum an Investitionsmöglichkeiten, zum einen dienen sie zur Absicherung des Depots, zur Spekulation oder auch zur langfristigen Investition. Dabei haben Investoren die Möglichkeit, einen Barren Gold zu erwerben oder auch in Aktien bis hin zu Derivaten zu investieren, die Rohstoffe als Basis haben. Wenn ein Investor vor Rohstoffen zurückschreckt, verpasst er unglaubliche Möglichkeiten. In den letzten Jahren haben sich die Rohstoffe zu einer eigenen Anlageklasse entwickelt. Auf Grund der Vielzahl von Rohstoffen hat ein Investor unterschiedlichste Möglichkeiten in diese Asset-Klasse zu investieren.

Inhaltsangabe:Problemstellung: Der Markt für Alternative Investments hat in den letzten Jahren ein erhöhtes Maß an Aufmerksamkeit erfahren. Ein Grund hierfür ist die Tatsache, dass einige Assetklassen in kurzer Zeit rasant gewachsen sind. So hat sich beispielsweise das in Hedge Fonds investierte Vermögen zwischen 1999 und 2004 auf eine geschätzte Summe von 950 Milliarden US-Dollar verdoppelt. Auch die lang anhaltende Baisse am Aktienmarkt und das dauerhaft niedrige Zinsniveau haben Investoren veranlasst sich mit alternativen Anlageformen auseinander zu setzen. Hinzu kommt, dass viele Anlageprodukte erst in den letzten Jahren entwickelt worden sind, sodass sich Investoren einem völlig neuen Spektrum an Möglichkeiten gegenüber sehen. Beispielsweise haben große Rückversicherer auf das vermehrte Auftreten von Naturkatastrophen reagiert und bieten Anlegern seit einiger Zeit die Möglichkeit in so genannte Katastrophenbonds zu investieren. So nutzt auch die Münchener Rück diese neuartige Möglichkeit der Verbriefung von Naturkatastrophenrisiken und hat erst Ende 2005 eine Katastrophenanleihe emittiert, die an das Auftreten von Wirbelstürmen gekoppelt ist. Neben vielen positiven Schlagzeilen haben auch Negativbeispiele zu der gesteigerten öffentlichen Wahrnehmung beigetragen. Bspw. stellte 1998 die Schieflage des Long Term Capital Management Hedge Fonds eine echte Bedrohung für die Stabilität des Finanzsektors dar. Nur die Intervention zahlreicher namhafter Investment Banken und der Federal Reserve Bank of New York sicherte die Integrität und Funktionsfähigkeit der Finanzmärkte. Alternative Investments stellen ein Anlagesegment dar, das oft nur recht unscharf von den traditionellen Anlageformen abgegrenzt wird. Im Allgemeinen fallen Anlagemöglichkeiten, die nicht den traditionellen Investments am Aktien-, Anleihen- und Geldmarkt zu geordnet werden können, in die Rubrik der Alternativen Investments. Als Folge davon findet sich eine große Anzahl zum Teil sehr verschiedener Investmentmöglichkeiten in diesem Segment wieder. Anleger sehen sich folglich mit sehr unterschiedlichen und teilweise komplexen Teilmärkten und Anlagemöglichkeiten konfrontiert. Human activities are significantly modifying the natural global carbon (C) cycles, and concomitantly influence climate, ecosystems, and state and function of the Earth system. Ever increasing amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) are added to the atmosphere by fossil fuel combustion but the biosphere is a potential C sink. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of C cycling in the biosphere is crucial for identifying and managing biospheric C sinks. Ecosystems with large C stocks which must be protected and sustainably managed are wetlands, peatlands, tropical rainforests, tropical savannas, grasslands, degraded/desertified lands, agricultural lands, and urban lands. However, land-based sinks require long-term management and a protection strategy because C stocks grow with a progressive improvement in ecosystem health.

Although there is a growing awareness about the many benefits of protected areas, concrete information about their full economic value is still scarce. This book provides a comprehensive method whereby all functions and values of natural and semi-natural ecosystems can be assessed and evaluated in a systematic manner. A checklist of 37 environmental functions is given with examples of the functions and socio-economic value of three major types of ecosystems: tropical moist forests, wetlands and an oceanic island ecosystem: the Galapagos National Park. In order to achieve the conservation and sustainable utilization of nature and natural resources, better information on the (economic) value of natural areas alone, however, is not enough. Unless ecological information is structurally integrated in the planning and decision-making process solving the environmental problems of today will prove difficult, if not impossible. In the last chapter of the book examples are therefore given of how the environmental function-concept can be used as a tool in environmental planning, management and decision-making, and stresses the need for "ecologizing" economic theory and practice.
