Qui est Anna Madgigine Jai Kingsley ? Née Anta Madjiguene Ndiaye, cette princesse issue de la famille royale de l'actuel Sénégal fut capturée en 1806, alors qu'elle n'avait que treize ans, pour être vendue à Zephaniah Kingsley, un marchand d'esclaves et riche exploitant originaire de Floride, qui, pris d'affection pour la belle Africaine, fit d'elle sa compagne, la mère de plusieurs de ses enfants, mais aussi son bras droit pour administrer ses terres. Anna connaît alors une incroyable ascension sociale dans une Amérique en construction bouleversée par les guerres - de Sécession, « des Patriotes » - et traversée par des tensions raciales de plus en plus violentes, qui lui permet non seulement de recouvrer sa liberté, mais aussi de devenir elle-même une femme d'affaires influente, gestionnaire de sa propre plantation et une figure centrale de la communauté noire libre. Au décès de son compagnon, elle mène un combat acharné contre la famille de ce dernier et la justice américaine pour protéger son héritage et celui de ses enfants métis. De l'Afrique à la Floride, en passant par Cuba et Haïti, l'extraordinaire périple de cette princesse wolof victime de la traite négrière est à l'origine d'une véritable légende, particulièrement au Sénégal, où son histoire la hisse au rang de véritable héroïne.
